I got a multi-region dvd player in Dixons the other day for €30. You have to get a four digit code off www.currys.co.uk to change it to region 0 but it is easy to do.
It's a Matsui. Not a name to fill you with confidence but for €30, you can't go wrong.
The picture is actually fine off it. I had been watching DVD's on my xbox since my last DVD player went belly-up and the picture off the Matsui is better than the xbox.

not sure about x-boxes, but you can with playstation2 with the help of this little contraption, works very well too, i think you can pick it up in hmv
