Casual anti-Americanism (1 Viewer)

I think the problem most people have with America is one of scale.. most europeans have no real clue about the variety and spread of culture in the US. I've got relatives in Texas, Florida and San Francisco, and they're about as different to each other as the Irish are to the French and Morrocans.

Any country that is its own harshest critic can't be all bad. The heartland americans that I met were among the nicest people you could meet too - but patriotism is STRONG anywhere you go in the US, in ways that can make them seem like one homogenous unit of morons at times.

On a side note - I think Irish culture doesn't seem to be one of holding back on opinion (whereas the English for example might keep stuff to themselves if they didn't like something) and can therefore seem extremely harsh to folks who just mind their own. One of my mates from London also reckoned he got a lot of racist crap when he lived in Dub (he's black), even when it was said in jest - "sure at least you don't have to worry about the sun eh Marcus.. hahaha!.."

co654523de ni45674ja, what are you up to later ? i'm at a bit of a loose end. do you fancy meetin' up and going on the pull?

Aye.. to make it worse he's Jamaican originally.. which meant he could hardly go a day without the likes of "Eyi jast waaant to beey a meelawn" or some other jamaican crap..

VAN HALEN RULE......THEREFORE AMERICA RULES

We came like babies
From our home across the sea
To see America.
And the people opened up their arms
To welcome us...to America.
We came like children
From a far and distant land
To see America, and the golden
Sun of freedom filtered down on us,
In America.

And the people stood and stared
Loved us more than we had dared - to
In America.

Super highways here and there
Pretty womens everywhere
Brady Bunch and Smokey Bear
Buildings reaching to the sky
Afro-sheen and apple pie
PTA and FBI.

The jumbo jet begins to rise
A joyful nation waves its bye-bye's.

Each religion, race, and creed
Gets exactly what they need
God bless Johnny Appleseed.

You don't find that?

There are certainly situations in which not being Irish helps. One of them has been in finding accommodation. People generally assume that Americans are more responsible, when, in reality, the fact is, it takes a lot of organisation to be able to move abroad and stay there, and it's just that the ones who last tend to be relatively responsible.

On the other hand, when I arrived here to do my MA seven years ago, I was pulled aside and told by another student, "Don't think for a minute you were accepted on merit. You took the place of someone deserving just because they want your money." And that was not an isolated incident. I was refused a mobile phone because 'we don't sell phones to foreigners, not even Americans'.

As far as jobs go, the work permit situation has become so unworkable that even if someone wants to hire you, you're pretty much fucked unless you can get an EU passport.

Are you ready for the new sensation?
Well, here's the shot heard 'round the world.
All you backroom boys salute when her flag unfurls.
Well, guess who's back in circulation?
Now, I don't know what you may have heard
but what I need right now's the original goodtime girl.

She's a vision from coast to coast,
sea to shining sea.
Hey, sister, you're perfect host.

Show me your bright lights and your city lights, all right.
I'm talkin' 'bout the Yankee Rose.
Bright lights in your city lights, all right.
I'm talkin' 'bout it.

When she walks, watch, the sparks will fly,
firecrackin' on the fourth of July.
No sad songs tonight, something's in the air.
She's a real state of independents.
So pretty when her rockets glare,
still provin' any night that her flag is still there.

She's a vision from coast to coast,
sea to shining sea.
Hey, sister, you're perfect host.

Show me your bright lights and your city lights, all right.
I'm talkin' 'bout the Yankee Rose.
Bright lights in your city lights, all right.
I'm in love with the Yankee Rose.

Ah, she's beautiful, alright,
mm, nothin' like her in the whole world.
Yeah, she's right on time, I'm on the case.
Pick up the phone, no time to waste.
She got the beat and here's a little bit comin' your way.

Bright lights, city lights.

(THAT'S FOR YOU JANE)
