In 2008, someone had the ludicrous notion that recruiting a glorified fanzine scrawler masquerading as an editorial cartoonist to illustrate legendary Irish journalist Con Houlihan’s Evening Herald column was a good idea. It was a strange experiment at the dusk of creative risks in journalism, but the collision of two worlds worked somehow, and the results, collected there for the first time, have been retrospectively rationalised as “some sort of anarchic bogger Beano”.

Expect slean-wielding bogmen, flat-cap navvies, impoverished literary strivers, threadbare journalists, rural philosophers, drunken priests, roosting hens, industrious rats, weather frogs, dumb snails, startled crubeens and other yokes.

BLACK PUDDING AND BOG MEN includes the complete run of published illustrations, sleeve notes by Boz and a foreword by David Diebold, the features editor who was responsible for this oddball pairing in the first place.

"...Another example of some jumped-up prick, clearly from Dublin, who thinks we're all a bunch of clayhoppers and mouthbreathers, picking our noses at mass and sneakily wiping it under the pew in case Father Ulcer Bracken catches us and keeps us on the sideline for the big game against Rathfungus... Fuck that! I'm not getting caught with that shite again... I learnt my lesson the hard way..." - Fergal Meningitis - Bótharnabollic GAA

"The gross irresponsibility of this publication is that it insists on leaning into the dirty abhorrent feculence of both rural and urban peasantry... a kind of misty-eyed, pathetic, slovenly Ireland that pleads authenticity and some sort of honour in poverty, when it's clear to anyone who contributes to society that fiscal prudence built this country, not heritage, tradition, history or any such foolishness. This festering rancid sewage outfall is of no artistic merit, represents poor value for the taxpayer and is not the sort of image we want to portray on the international stage..." - Rory Fionn MacHugo - author of The Hibernian Neoliberal

"...Jaysus... all the rampaging crubeens... makes me wish auld Greasy Mick was still sellin' them down the Castle Chipper..." - Scaldy Crotty - Crotty's Fertiliser & Funeral Directors

That Fergal Meningitis ..absolute shite talker
