Anyone out there know of any obscure well crafted horror movies that I can genuinely shit my pants watching. Not the usual Exorcist, Shining, Halloween even though these were brilliant but something that has maybe slipped under the radar and has classic horror written all over its dna.

Cheers.

i'd say for genuine under the radar creep outs.. check out

The Woman In Black
Don't Go To Sleep
The Sentinal
Burnt Offerings
Amityville II
The Changeling

i'm gonna have a think about this one
the ultimate answer is 70's/80's haunted house is where it's at

I really don't like Burnt Offerings (despite being a big Dan Cutis fan).

Good call on The WOman in Black - The Sentinal and The Changling.

I think the original THE HAUNTING is still pretty creepy and to a lesser degree The Legend of Hell House.

I thought the Japanese GRUDGE was pretty spooky when I first saw it but I'm a bit tired of the white face child/long haired ghost stuff now...

classic horror and shit-your-pants-scary are not necessarily the same thing...

I could recommend some classics that probably would not scare you & by the same token suggest something that frightened me but by no means classic.

Exorcist III freaked me out way more than the first one (which didnt freak me out at all). Theres one shot in particular that had me leaving lights on for the next few nights. well, i was only 15.

REC was also terrifying.

Yeah I liked Exorcist III way more than the original and that shot is spooooooooooky...

The Blair Witch Project disturbed the b'jaysus outta me when I saw it first, recently I loved Wolf Creek, Drag Me To Hell (equal parts horror and comedy), REC and The Orphanage which isn't really a horror but more like an old fashioned ghost story.

i love The Haunting.. despite having seen it about 20 times at this stage

i just thought of a great one, where the ending really creeped me out..
Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark - with the little creepy guys running around the house
always used to get shown on the BBC back in the 80's.. tv movie originally, i think

also, an 80's classic that really scared me as a kid, The Gate

i also love and was seriously creeped out by Event Horizon.. so much so that when i saw it first i had to turn it off half way through. love that movie

Possesion is really fucking weird. reminds me of Hellraiser.. except weirder

I rarely find horror films scary. I find films like Casino really scary.

Me too. Most are just too unrealistic to be scary. Now, movies like that British one last year Edan Lake, freaked me out a bit. Mostly because tweens and teens scare the hell out of me these days. That shit is believable.
