Best and worst specialist music magazines...Irish or otherwise (1 Viewer)

Glenda, light of my life, fire of my loins. My sin, my soul. Gil-se-en: the tip of the tongue taking a trip of three steps down the palate to tap, at three, on the teeth. Glen. da. da. She was Glenda, plain Glenda, in the morning, standing six feet one in one sock.

Such were the words Vladmir Nabokov may have written, did he find himself here, as I, in the crepuscular evening surrounds of the Shelbourne hotel, struck almost dumb by the Ledean form before me, reclining lazily across the fine furnishings, muse of the Drico, muse of the nation, Helen-like she would have caused wars had she dwelt in ancient Greece. I speak of course of Glenda. Glenda Gilsen.

Alas, no.
Were the D11 Runners featured?

I'm just trying to think of a short-lived Irish music mag from the Mid-Eighties that tried to trump Hot Press' monopoly. Lasted two, maybe three issues. Cry Before Dawn flexi-disc with #1. Free Tampax with # 2. Sank without trace. In Beaumont at least.

fresh magazine? Or maybe get fresh? had gerry ryan in a bandana reviewing the singles.

218 - Alice Coltrane. Can't find the issue.
246 - Wilco. Checked letters page - no joy.

any luck?

no, only had the last 14 issues to hand. the others are in the nursery and herself was asleep when i got home. will have to wait for the weekend or for enlightenment from the oracle. still, re-read the mark ribot jukebox which was good.

It was Fresh alright. I still have the Cry Before Dawn flexidisc at home too. It had 2 songs, Gone Forever and Sentimental, which were both great, but the feckin thing had Mark Cagney on it introducing the songs as if it was a radio show.

One of their issues gave out weird free chewing gum. Can't remember what make, but I do remember the sticks of gum were red.

'Adventures In Modern Music ' says it all for me.
Well that and the fact that like a lot of people on this forum I've got thousands of records and my passion for music hasn't waned over all these years. The Wire makes me feel like I have no records.
And rightly so.

Ah I love that twinge you get when you read the reviews section and realise your going to need about a grand just to catch up with all this. And then there's next month, and then next month..

any one remember lime lizard?

this free comp tape (from 1993) was great!

Yeah-I picked up a couple of issues of that. It was hard enough to come by though.
Ditto Siren magazine.

Of recent times Comes With A Smile was pretty good. Excellent cover-mounted cds. Well...if you're into folk, alt. country etc.

by the by setting up a magazine is insanely hard and difficult and costly, if you get it right *cha-ching* but if not.... off the top of my head some of the issues you can encounter are

• paying for your first print run, costs shit loads, a lot of printers won't give you credit cause they expect you too fold anyhow so it's off to the bank for you... this will probably be true of issues 2 and 3 as well because...

• ad agenices won't touch a mag till it's three issues in, and

• even then a lot of agencies won't bother with anything under 10,000 readers. Pricks.

• and then you have to try and get the advertisers to pay you, which will take months, during which time you're still paying the printers out of your own "pocket"

• by this time the contributors will be all "where's my cheque, where's my cheque!"

• and the only people left on your full time staff will hate you and be quitting left right and centre, which means...

• you'll start employing (unpaid)interns from various Journalism courses, till eventully your entire staff are 19 year old jumped up a-holes/Hunter Thompson gonzo wannabes and waster stoner types

I'll think of more later...

haha, good analysis.

you'll need to put in a lot of money yourself - or if you want to borrow, be willing to put some tangible security.
