Sonic youth for sure...
Medulla by Bjork also

those two are so good that I can't think of anything else I have got this year...

The Sufjan Stevens 'Michigan' album is excellent. I think he's playing the Douglas Hyde gallery at the end of the month.

The best release methinks so far is 10 by clouddead. It's Amazing.

Honourable mentions :

Soulwax
Redneck Manifesto
The Killers
Trans Am

Yeah, I Am Brazil a definite contender...
Catering for Headphones was released this year, wasn't it? Fantastic stuff.
And I still love You are the Quarry....
Can't remember what else came out off the top of my head....

the best album i bought this year was transatlanticism by death cab but i reckon that was released last year. still love it.

mentions to rest, and waiting room, by december i reckon the rednecks will be there too, hasnt left my cd player.

also lali puna - faking the books... also one of my favourite gigs of the year.

tom waits - real gone. i can't even listen to the whole of Hoist That Rag cause i keep wanting to vomit with excitement. brilliant

mission of burma-onoffon
the travesty that is nicotine bong instantly bars onoffon from winning any 'record of the year' awards.

Dopplereffekt - Linear Accelerator
I'd probably go with Stephen on this as well.

Although it's the best of a pretty poor year, so maybe that's faint praise.

Others which may not be the best of 2004, but which didn't totally suck (which is saying something this year):

"Quiet City", Pan American
"The Power Out", Electrelane
"Margarine Eclipse", Stereolab
"Creature Comforts", Black Dice
"The Difference Between Me and You Is That I'm Not on Fire", McLusky
"Neurofibro", Claro Intelecto
"Ten", cLOUDDEAD
"Derbe Respect, Alder", Faust vs Dalek
"Louden Up Now", !!!
"76/77", Cobra Killer
"Isol", Modul
"Venice", Fennesz
"From the Double Gone Chapel", Two Lone Swordsmen

I'm sure I'd think of more if I put my mind to it.

Paul

didn't buy many albums this year

squarepusher - ultravisitor is rad though

dont tell anyone but I bought that new greenday album
they sound like feckin Weezer or somethin
lost their raw sound completley, back in day day, i.e. Dookie ,they were cool man cool

forgot about the new black dice album creature comforts. its a killer.

the converge one is shit hot as well. one nation by yakuza is really good but i dont know if that counts since it was recorded early last year.

the david grubbs one is good as well.

Most of my favourites of the year have been reissues.
Mentally Ill-Gacys place
Zolar X-Timeless
Raw Power-you are the Victim
have been amongst the best.
New records by Witchcraft, Mission Of Burma and the Solution have been getting multiple playsbut the record I've probably listened to most this year is Vicious Circle by the Zero Boys, released in 1982.
