I'm looking to get one, never played one before so I only want a cheap-ish kind of jobby to learn on, any recommendations would be much appreciated :)

You can't go wrong with a Squier Jazz bass. Preferably the standard not the affinity series.

Something like this for €244:

I see they have a bundle of a case and amp with this for €299 too.

or for €299 you could get this:

Thanks :) On a side note, how difficult/easy is it to learn? My goal in life is to be able to play that bit from Rio by Duran Duran, and I'm not all that patient

Bass is easy to play simple stuff and hard to play hard stuff. If you like the pixies I reckon their stuff is a good place to start, easy stuff that sounds cool on it's own.

Just looked Rio up it's fairly alright, sounds a bit harder than it is. There's lessons and all on youtube.

There are defo cheaper but I think 250 is well worth playing for a bass that'd do ya pretty much forever. Anything cheaper you'll want to replace soon enough and it'll probably be horrible to play.

Are thomann instruments good, yeah? Because we've laods of stuff from them around like pedal boards and such, but didn't even know they made instruments

The Harley benton/thomann stuff ain't that bad, good enough to learn on certainly.
(but)
If you do want to stick with bass for good, then i'd go along with what Moose said, the squier basses are great.

Nowt wrong with a daycent squire jazz bass, I learned to play by constantly playing along with The Cure's Disintegration album, songs are all nice and long so you can get into a good groove, and the basslines arnt that complicated, easy enough to pick out and deadly.

i'm sure you can find a second hand squire really cheap on adverts.ie or buyandsell.ie
