Probably a stupid question but will playing my bass through my guitar amp damage the amp at all?

Easy answer is yes it will as the amp is designed to handle guitar and not bass.
In my experience if you keep the gain and/or volume down there shouldn't be a problem so plugging in at home at low volumes is fine but gigging or loud practice isn't a good idea. It also sounds shite.

I've been using a 70's Carlsbro guitar amp for years as a bass amp - the fuses blew in it once, but that was about six years ago and I've had no problems since.

I wouldn't really recommend you putting bass through a good guitar amp, as you will most likely kill the speakers.

Used to be done a lot more in ye olden days.

Marshall had an amp that was for bass or guitar.
You'd just hook it up to a bass cab for bass or a guitar cab for.......
.....you get the idea.

Wouldn't recommend playing bass through a guitar cab or combo though.

Guitar through a bass cab is fine, AFAIK.

i ran my active-pickuped-Precision thru my Bassman combo (you'd THINK that was an ok thing to do) for loud practices...

...long story short: DON'T DO IT. they make bass amps for a reason.

It'll just damage the speakers (in a tube amp anyways), they wouldn't be designed for the low frequencies and would shake the cones to death, and sound shite in the first place.
I have an old 60's Carlsbro amp too which can take a bass or guitar. But they were designed like a PA to take guitar and keyboards/bass back in the day when the band would all plug into the same big ass amp.
They got pissed at me one day in Waltons for playing a bass into one of their guitar combos. Ha ha, nearly got run out of the place. Can't blame them really even though I was only playing at whispering volume compared to the death metal kids beside me practising their deathdefying solo runs.

Rock on.
