right just saw the search forum thing

just one other question though...does registering your band as a business, copyright your name... our band are having a bit of trouble in that a couple of foreign bands have the same name, but we'd like to keep the name at least in ireland, and if it comes to a stage we're releasing anything abroad think about it then... or do a frames dc type thing,

anyone have any advice for that?

You can register a business name in the company office in Parnell Square (the opposite side to the recently raided squat!) for a mere €30.

www.oasis.gov.ie may have all the forms an info. Its quick and painless. Setting up a company about your band is a tad more complicated and may require filing accounts and such things. If you register the band as a bussiness name you won't have to see your bands name used on a new fusion powered vibrating dildo in Ireland at least...!

hi moc,

there's a link here to a factsheet that we have on FMC's website called

http://www.fmc-ireland.com/publications/factsheets/indp_labl.htm

it relates to setting up your own label but it contains the relevant information. there's some new legislation coming in, in the new year rgarding registering as a company. i think it may get more expensive to do so but nothing is clear yet in this regard.

for what it's worth, http://www.basis.ie/ is the equivalent government information site for businesses. that might have more detailed info.

Yeah, you can register your band name as a company name with the Companies Registration Office strangely enough. It's facing the memorial gardens at Parnell Square or you can visit the site at www.cro.ie
Somebody else here stated that you might have to show annual returns but you wont. You'll only have to show records if you start declaring VAT and claiming it back on your purchases and that will be to the inland revenue - probably not an avenue you want to take!
Registering the band as a company wont copyright the name of your band though. You'll need a solicitor for that and it can be a very complicated procedure because you have to take into account the laws in different countries. Your best bet it to go to your local citizens information office and ask them when and where they provide free legal aid (most centres have meetings with a solicitor once a week) and they'll point you in the right direction.
You might have to consider spelling it differently. That's what started that trend off that had people using letters and numbers in spellings of bands eg. deviate = DV8 etc..
