Jane mentioned in the library thread that her library is an art deco building so I thought I'd start another thread. Myself and the boyfriend are a little obsessed with original art deco buildings and art deco inspired architecture and have found a few around Dublin. Can anyone point me in the direction of any they know of? Thanks.

there are some good residential examples out on the howth road - me and stan have a dream to live in a deco house. it's never gonna happen here, unfortunately.

I love the hoover building at the london, it's fab, even if it is a tesco now

Top of Grafton St. Above (part of) the newsagents. The Stephen's Green end. No one ever notices it.

And the Dept. Of Ent, Tade and Emp, opposite the monstrosity that is Agriculture House on Kildare St. Deadly stuff.

I love this one:

And stupidly, I hadn't really copped that the Arts and Craft/Mock Tudor bit was the back of that building. But christ, I'd always assumed it was knackered on the inside, but it's GORGEOUS and also AMAZING. You can download a pdf with good pics and a story abotu the restoration.

They had to rebuild this one, as you probably already know, so it's art deco, but only in style, not anymore in actual date: http://www.geocities.com/barrybyrne.geo/ewl.htm

This one is on Ringsend Rd, just before the Ringsend Bus Depot. I love it lots.

There used to be a second tram building further down, just near Shelbourne Park, and (hey, wow, this is my second go at ranting about this gaff today) that was gorgeous and had all this cool glass and an awesome clock and was just beautiful, although derelict. Of course, it was bought by a fucking developer who had to preserve elements of it, and who, of course, only preserved it as little as possible, and it is now the worst example I have ever seen of incorporating an old structure. It stands there like a fucking unwanted granny, hunched over, cowering under the new building, clearly only preserved out of contempt. It's shit. It was one of my favourite buildings in the area, and when I saw what had been done, I think I called carbide in the middle of the night just to rant down the phone at her because I knew she'd understand what it meant to be painfully, head-crushingly angry over a building.

Flats on Townsend St:

Actually, christ, you could walk from the city centre down to where I live and pass a good selection of Art Deco buildings.

If you do head down to the library, cross the road (back towards the village) and go up the sidestreet (I can't remember the name) between the Ringsend Market and the dry cleaner. There's an old cinema there that is now a FAS office.

There's another old cinema on Serpentine Rd, just up at the end of Tritonville Rd in Sandymount, that's now a Sikh Temple.

There are a whole shiteload of Art Deco houses on the way up the seafront between Clontarf and Sutton, probably around Dollymount somewhere.

This isn't really art deco, but it's fucking cool: http://www.irish-architecture.com/buildings_ireland/dublin/southcity/adelaide_road/kiosk.html

You probably know most of those already, but it's worth having a nosy at the Ringsend library and the cinema.

Oh yeah! That Entemps building looks practically fucking Stalinist. I love it to bits.

In the last half hour, I've just developed an instant obsession with that Gas building, though. Incredible.

But great, just what I needed, a new nerdy obsession.

By the way, any word on what's happening with the Carlton Cinema?

Finest art deco building(conceptually) in Dublin is the kodak building on Lwr Rathmines Road. HMD used to work there.
There is a great photo book of Dublin Cinemas you see cheap around the place (too lazy to get up to the bookshelf and name the author - sorry!
head on over to archiseek.com and you will find all you need to know...

God. If anything bad happens to that building, there is no fucking justice in this world. I love what O'Connell St is architecturally, and the way all the buildings are as a group. It's just too bad that, as with so many architecturally interesting areas of Dublin (which, in fairness, is kinda most of it), you don't even notice when you're on it because you're so busy trying to navigate your way out of there.

This is absolutely nothing to do with Art Deco, but I love this building:

I love the cheesy roundel on the top, and I love the way these huge Georgian-type windows are crowded onto this tiny building. A fulsome facade and a pastiche on steroids, and I fucking love the shit out of it. Really nice pub, too. HUGEST gilded mirror ever in the back of the room, and just really well done inside.

Oooh! And here's the cinema:

And a better pic of the Tramways powerhouse: http://ireland.archiseek.com/buildings_ireland/dublin/ringsend_irishtown/dutc_powerhouse_lge.html

Carlton facade at least is protected. There's a kind of neo art deco office building on the corner of kevin st/redmonds hill opposite the corner stone pub that is interesting enough(built 4/5 years ago)nuthin' exceptional but well executed.

The elaborate drinking emporium facades never really caught on in dublin as much as in britian, an unfortunate loss was 'the irish house' on wood quay where the corpo are now..was the most over the top late victorian/edwardian pub frontage of its day

Wow, that looks amazing. According to this, the facade is in pieces in a warehouse in Inchicore: http://www.apollo-magazine.com/issue/september-2006/70382/dublin-news.thtml

The thing about the facade is that, well, it's not the facade that is important. It's the interior, too, even if it's been radically altered because I'm guessing there may still be original features. And even if there aren't, there will be an interesting progression of interior cinema features that coule be really worth preserving. Once they've ripped shit out and given it trendy glass walls, and a 'modern' look, it's gone. That building down in Ringsend, I wish I had before and after photos. It had a protected facade, too. It doesn't look preserved, it looks like disfigurement and architectural abuse.

A similar fate awaits the survivng greek revival facade of the former presbyterian church on Sean McDemott st-lazy and sad

The back door of the Gas building is so cool. It just has a little "GAS" sign in that cool font in the middle of a random bunch of shops.

Is the Kodak building the one that Merton Copyprint occupy now on Rathmines Road? Thats a fucking slick building either way.
