Mrs. egg_ runs some national bat population studies (like the Birdwatch Ireland stuff, but for bats), and one of them involves volunteers slowly driving a pre-planned route at nighttime with a bat detector sticking out the window.

Somebody has pulled out, and she needs a new team near Birr. Normally you need 2 people - one navigator and one driver. Takes 1.5-2 hours Car-based Bat Monitoring - Bat Conservation Ireland

I know this is pretty niche, but so are thumpeders

I don't know what it says about me, or the time I log onto thumped, but after a day of working on budgets I read 'car based bat monitoring' as 'cat based bat monitoring'

bats are way more common than people think. we went on a bat walk along the dodder about 15 years ago; a lad came walking past with his dog, and met a bunch of people holding weird little machines making chirping noises so asked what we were up to.
'nah, no bats here, i've been walking my dogs along the river here for years and there are no bats'.
five seconds later, one flies past.

I think this is my favourite thread title on Thumped ever. I wish that I could help, but live in Dublin :(

Mrs. egg_ did a study of bats in parks in Dublin in late 90s/early 00s and the park constable in Stephen's Green swore blind there were no bats in Stephen's Green. We took a bat detector in and there were approx one zillion of them
