yeah well I guess we're both saying the same thing - in general it's offensive but it is just a word, and it depends on who's saying it and what the context is. Most gays - at least in western culture - don't find the word "queer" offensive anymore, despite years of it being used as an offensive term. The reason I say "most gays" is because otherwise you wouldn't get TV programmes like Queer Eye For The Straight Guy or Queer As Folk (Can you imagine "Nigger's Eye for the White Guy" or "Jew As Fuck"?)

But what you're saying is "don't tar us all with the same brush", that there are many gays and bis who DO find it offensive - and essentially and I'm saying that too. Just because a few black people in the US use the word nigger in a parochial, ad hoc way, that doesn't make it okay for everyone else in the world. But it IS just a word - the appearance of the word nigger, often in a humorous way, in Huckleberry Finn - written by a white American - a few hundred times probably did more for the abolition of slavery in the US than a thousand bleeding hearts. So it means that we have to consider these things in an intelligent way, and not have this knee-jerk, polarised reaction every time we hear the word bandied about, because let's face it, lots of people say it who AREN'T racist. And lots of course who are. And not just taxi drivers.

that depends if you're talking about people who choose to define themselves as 'queer' because they don't want to be catagorised by, and in opposition to, straight mainstream culture. it's an established school of thought in academia and politics, but not every homosexual or bisexual person regards themselves as 'queer', and many find the word extremely offensive.

on the taxi driver thing... around the time of the last one of these threads with that dude ragnorak spouting loadsa shite i went onto the nazi forum thing and they were saying that one of the best ways to promote their thinking was via the taxi drivers (who blame foreigners for everything anyway) it was so logical that it was quite frightening, i wonder do the taxi men realise they're the tools of oppression. i like that 'tools of oppression' i'm going to use that agin.

Its not exactly as black & white as that.

It depends where you are!Eastern Europeans use the word Nigger, which is considered a polite reference to people of African decent.The use Black when referring to people of the Causasas area.

I use the word Black, never had any problems or offended anyone.

A coloured person - that term tends to confues me, so i don`t bother using it at all.

I think culshies in general are quite conscious of outsiders - a category that includes protestants, hippies and 'fuckers coming down from Dublin' as well as travellers and non-nationals. when i was in vietnam two years ago, a lot of people on the outskirts of hué or hoi an (can't remember which now but it was the only place i remember seeing it) had swastika symbols outside their houses. even though it was obviously not meant as a nazi association it was still strange at first.

it's a white ford escort emblazoned with celtic logos, scarves, banners etc. It's quite highlarious looking. He also has a dog (or maybe 2) who are regularly attired in celtic jersies as well. It's safe to say he's a big fan. He also looks like he'd kick the head off you if you were a rangers fan and all.

Crispian Mills got a fierce amount of stick over using that info as justification for using the swastika as part of some artwork, not sure if it was for something in thier live show or on a record. Either way that fucker was useless.
