An Post tracking/customs questions (3 Viewers)

Yeah, I got done on customs recently too on a guitar I bought
on Ebay from USA, 21% VAT and 3.2% excise duty
Example:
guitar 800 + shipping 120 =920
so 920 + 3.2% duty = 950 (Duty varies on the nature of item)
950 + 21%vat = 1150

1150 - 920 = 230 customs bill

now heres the pisser anything over 650 euros value An post wont process
You have to pay a clearance agent to fill out a customs form.
(apparently there’s 50 boxes to fill its meant to be tricky, where do u get
this form? go to customs then forwarding to Portloaise not worth IMO)
That will be 50 euro for the clearance Agent please. (In fairness it was cleared in a day)

230+50 = 280 (if your still wth me)

Any reputable reliable Ebay seller wont mark down the value on
expensive goods cos it wont be insured for its full value
during shipping and they are liable to be prosecuted for falsifying customs forms.

Another thing Papal ride you on there currency conversion.
Very poor exchange rate not what’s shown on Ebays dollars to euro grrr.
Was it worth it. Probably yes I got a fair deal on a guitar you
can't get here and hundreds cheaper than Thomanns etc.
Music shops prices here are rip off, like everything else, suppose
they have to make a living too. Plus the euro is really strong against dollars.
Yeah you could fly over and walk through customs or be unlucky and get snagged.
I’m a hell of a lot wiser than I was though and would stick to Europe on
Ebay (Americans have all the best guitars though) unless it was
really really worth the hassle.

Its not them I'm dealing with its the Revenue.. I should ring them but the page with contact number is at home.. Their office is only open like 10-3 every day and I'm at college all the time

My husband is a Yank and we shipped some of his personal possessions by US Postal Service. Just got a call to tell me that we have to pay duty on them. Can they do this? We had them marked as personal belongings and stated that he was relocating on the documents.

Anyone know how/where we go about disputing this?

well here's the postal guide pdf

www.revenue.ie/en/customs/leaflets/postal-guide.pdf

by the looks of things there's no such thing as 'personal', as in not subject to import duty, if sent in the post. it appears to fall under 'gift from a friend'.

Having said that.....

There are a number of other circumstances where relief from some or all import charges may be available. If you think your goods qualify for relief you should contact your local Revenue Office

It also says you can appeal any customs charges.....

also:

http://www.revenue.ie/en/customs/leaflets/pn1878a.html

Goods imported under the travellers’ duty free allowances must be transported and accompanied by you.

whether that applies to personal belongings or not I don't know

That blows since I was the one who told you to do it. Shit. I brought everything over on the plane with me over 2 trips. If I have to move back I won't even bother. I'll leave everything behind. Surely you can explain this some how and show you're just married and himself is relocating. No? Sorry. :(

I believe proof of residence in the United States for a prolonged period before the shipping and proof of residence here might cut it.
This is just what I've heard though and from someone who did it some years back.

Knowing those pricks, I would say you will have to pay the duty first and claim it later.

Good luck.

i was in irish college with this pathological liar before and he tells me his mate is posting him a naggin and he'll share some with me. a week later he says "it broke in the post". the liar.

hope thats some help.
