American Analog Set: "The American Analog Set's slow, dreamy pop is as clean as the bite in an autumn chill, and yet warm, too, like Galaxie 500's womb-like atmospheres." (Alternative Press)

American Analog Set Biography:

The American Analog Set was formed in Ft. Worth, sometime in 1995. A bunch of dumb kids from Texas you say? Well maybe, but they made some interesting sounds and came to the attention of the fine folks at Emperor Jones/Trance Syndicated Records. The band relocated to Austin in 1996 and set to work. Over the next four years or so the AmAnSet released three albums on emperor Jones-1996's ' The Fun of Watching Fireworks, ' 1997's ' From Our Living Room to Yours, ' and 1999's ' the Golden Band.' The band also embarked on several U.S. tours with the likes of MOGWAI, THE LAPSE, and DEATH CAB FOR CUTIE, in support of their albums.During this period the band also put out three 7" singles on E.J., as well as a contribution to the Darla Records Bliss Out series, ' Late One Sunday and the Following Evening.' The final release for the AmAnSet on E.J. was released on May 22, 2001. Entitled ' Through the 90's, Singles, Unreleased,' the disc is a complilation of the three aforementioned 7" singles (now out of print), as well as other live, unreleased, and alternate takes of songs. The vault is officially clear!

In 2001 American Analog Set released what MOJO called "their forth and finest album" entitled 'Know By Heart' on Tiger Style Records. After several years and various line-up changes, the band is finally gelled as a five piece, with each member bringing significant musical contiburitons to the table. The record was released in September and was accompanied by one full US tour, one eastern US tour and a full European tour. ' Know By Heart ' incorporates elements of the classic AASet sound yet takes the band in new directions, relying less heavily on the farfisa and more on their trademark pop sensibilities. 'Know By Heart' travels all over the map throughout its twelve tracks. Songs range from pure pop glory, to grooved out instrumentals, to lullabies to soothe your shattered nerves as evidence by such tracks as "Punk as Fuck " and '"Million Young." The record features more vibes and electric piano than previous releases, as well as layered vocals and textured rhythms. That album is the document of a band coming into its own.

2002 brought the release of yet another EP from the boys, entitled ' Updates,' and featuring the first-ever remixes of AmAnSet tracks by label-mates/ tour-mates her space holiday and belgium's Styrofoam. 2 new AmAnSet tracks and 2 remixes each from hsh and Styrofoam make this 6-song EP just enough to tide you ove until the next album proper, which is tentatively slated for an early 2003 release. Of course, with singer/guitarist Andrew Kenney attending graduate school in NY this coming fall, the band embarked on what was to be there last tour for quite some time in June, trekking across 2 continents in 3 months.

Nina Nastasia:

Nina Nastasia returns with third album, Run To Ruin, which sees the folk noir singer songwriter resolutely turning her back on the commercialism and surface gratification of her Hollywood hometown by releasing a haunting collection of songs that is refreshingly otherworldly and time -laden. Recorded in April 2002, one week after Nina and her band played the All Tomorrow's Parties festival (curated by Shellac) at the windy ghost resort of Camber Sands, these new songs are delicate and intense. Neither sweet nor harsh, they draw on a rich heritage of ballads, waltzes and an American gothic groove that is all her own.

Her voice conveys an array of emotions as it wanders through a dense musical backdrop of cellos, violins and guitars like a curious child exploring a long deserted and overgrown house. A place not unlike Iain Burgess' legendary Black Box studio, the 300 year old farm house in Noyate La Gravoyere, France where Run To Ruin was recorded with Steve Albini, who has championed Nina's music since engineering her first record, Dogs, which was released in 2000 by the micro indie label Socialist.

While at the atmospheric Black Box studio, Nina Nastasia also recorded her first Peel session with her band, which includes such notable musicians as Jim White (the Dirty Three drummer) and Gerry Leonard (who is now the primary guitarist for David Bowie). John Peel (BBC's eminent DJ and rock scholar) has championed Nina's music since the release of 2002's The Blackened Air, which was sent to him by an enthusiastic Albini. Nina and her band record albums live, thus within a relatively short time frame, generally under a week. Run To Ruin is decidedly Nina Nastasia's darkest collection of songs to date.

TOM WAITS in Bob Log III:

In the April 24-May 1 issue of Time Out London, Tom Waits is asked who he is listening to right now. He says, "Well, I really like Wu Tang Clan, those guys kill me. And then there's this guy named Bob Log, you ever heard of him? He's this little kid -- nobody ever knows how old he is -- wears a motorcycle helmet and he has a microphone inside of it and he puts the glass over the front so you can't see his face, and plays slide guitar. It's just the loudest strangest stuff you've ever heard. You don't understand one word he's saying. I like people who glue macaroni on to a piece of cardboard and paint it gold. That's what I aspire to basically."

DAVID BOWIE on The Lonesome Organist:

"The Lonesome O playes (takes breath) drums, percussion, organ, harmonica, whistle, tap shoes, saxophone and voclas, among other things, ALL AT THE SAME TIME. I kind you not! Fabulous stuff with lovely line in titles. How about Balloon Race Phenomenon or Fly On My Plate? Try the album 'Cavalcade' on Thrill Jockey. Yes, it's the same label as MOM, but if this looks like an ad for T Jockey it's because they couldn't put out a bad record even if their ears were lopped off." David Bowie, MOJO, July 2002.

Thrill Jockey is home to artists such as Trans Am, Bobby Conn, Tortoise, Mouse On Mars, etc...

i've got this great idea for a visual concept for the c4o gig tonite:
what if we roll them all up on stage and drop them into a giant connect four game while firing tennis balls at them?

i'm sure doorstaff and compere gimp would love that.

heh heh, i'd be pretty contect just fucking tennis balls at the lot of them... for the whole night. even after they're finished playing. yeah! :D

This was a lovely way to pass an evening. Found all these klepto urges rising to the surface but...Jagstangs, Jazzmasters, Rickenbackers...and my very first time seeing a real live Fender Rhodes....FUCK!!! (It was a Fender Rhodes wasn't it?)

Why didn't yer man play his nice SG though?

Also: Jagstangs are the mullets of the guitar world.

Maybe, I've never played one and am sure it must feel nicer than a mullet, eh, yeah, where am I going with this. I'd always opt for a Jag or a Mustang (or both) any day.

Jagstangs are such a girls guitar, that's why both Courtney Love and Ian play one.

And why the fcuk was he playing his guitar through a PA mixing type thing? was the Fender Rhodes not good enough?

Cool gig though, man I love that venue (except for the sound on stage!bog)

Nah, I do believe that's a hoax ... what with it being an American 62 n'all that.

Anyway, I thought that thing that the guitarist was playing through was just a head/or preamp (mabye?) for his Vox amp (which was behind the keyboard player)... I didn't think he was DI-ed?

Are Jagstangs girls' guitars and define girls' guitars, while you're at it (just out of interest)?
