Tour de France 2007 thread (2 Viewers)

I've been to a few and yeah, its a different experience altogether than the flat stages.

that said, they do still fly by fairly fast. If you're on one of the later climbs they'll be all spread out so will go by in dribs and drabs.

The best 2 experiences I've had watching cycling were on the Peña Carbaga in La Vuelta in 2011 and on Alpe d'Huez in the Tour in 2014. They did 2 ascents that year and both Nico and Dan Martin were in the race. We had great craic shouting abuse at Froome the dirt-bird.

Eddie Dunbar and Ben Healy are in an 8-man break today with around 60k km go

MVdP is in the break though. He's only a minute back on GC so they might not be allowed stay away. If he wasn't there they deffo would as there's no-one there a thread. Healy is ~8 mins down, everyone else 20 mins or more.

But it looks like UAE might have sat up in the peleton. They might let MVdP take yellow as they know he's no thread to Pogachar in the mountains, and it'll mean they won't have to defend for a day or two.

There are 3 categorised climbs left. I expect the break to start attacking each other on the next cat-3 climb (or the one after that). They can't carry MVdP to the line.

The break currently has 2 mins 55 on the chasing pack.

Hardly seen any of Tour. 6 minute packages of last two days last night.
Saw a bit yesterday with 35 km left when Healy was already 35 secs up after attacking 42 km to go but had go out after that.
When it comes to solo attacks in hilly races, Ben Healy is a beast. Very few can do this better - probably only Pogacar or Evenepoel.
Good ride by Eddie as well. Delighted he is finally at the tour. Great lad

Crash w/ 5 km odd left. Dunbar and Healy went down.
Healy off again quickly with team mate. But Eddie who looks OK took a while.
A Bahrain guy went down ahead of them. Two Bahrain lads and another guy looked in a bad way.

1.5 km left on Muur de Bretagne.

EDIT: Pity for Ben, finish was perfect for him.

Eddie wouldn't have been too bothered to finish quickly as he's not concerning himself with GC.

Healy was only ~2 mins down on yellow after yesterday's stage so he will have been mindful of time. But if he wants to target another stage he'll need to lose a bit more time on GC first.

Healy up the road again. Looks like the break will stay away to the end.

Its Bastille day in France. I make it that there are 3 Frenchies in the break. They'll be gunning for the stage. Its an uphill Cat 2 to the finish line. Looks short but shit steep. Dunno if its gonna suit Healy. I'm guessing he'll attack on the next climb.

50 years ago the other day -
13 July 1975. stage 15 Nice to Pra-Loup
Best top 6 on any Tour de France stage ever.
Thevenet is 76 now and looks fresh on Tour podium presentations. Lovely man - Polo Kimmage will tell you.

Thevenet documentary. Footage of stage 15 begins @ 35:00. Thevenet finishing begins @ 40:18
When Gimondi went past Merckx it was such a shock that the cameras miss it and then the camera moves away with Gimondi and also misses Thevenet passing Merckx.
ESPN Classic in France rebroadcast this stage but I can't find it now.
The finish cameras section is amazing.
Eddy is crawling in a huge gear with a few hundred metres left and little Lucien Van Impe (4th on stage behind Zoetemelk) goes past dancing on the pedals and leaves him for dust.
Then another Italian great riding his first and only Tour takes 6th.
The top 5 on the stage won 10 Tours between them.

2nd. Went too soon, but yer man sat in the whole way up. Prick.
Pity. Ventoux stage is a huge prize. And Paret-Pantre's (sic) team mate Van Wilder catching back up with leaders and then riding on front until last few hundred metres swung it for P-P. Was still stunned to see Healy in yet another break. He must shattered tired now.
I've been watching Healy for a few years - repeated long range attacks / attacking out of a break with 40 km left. Only a few top lads can do this.
Healy's surely got overall Combatif prize in Paris sewn up already. This was his 3rd daily one today. And he's 9th on GC.
I've only watched 6 minute highlights of most stages. I was a pro cycling nut at one stage but now I watch it less and don't take it too seriously.
The classics and women's racing are the best.
