what was the name of that team again? Conor Dunne and Eddie Dunbar rode for them.
Aqua Blue. I'd forgotten that Eddie Dunbar was with them somehow. That team had zero taste. They had no sponsors, they could have done basically anything with the kit and bike they liked, and they ended up with that weird upside down yellow V that looked shite.

There was an Aqua Blue squad that dominated the Irish domestic circuit, then after a couple years (?) they had a different team that raced at Pro Continental level in Europe and rode the Vuelta (Stefan Denifl* won a Vuelta stage for Aqua Blue).
A second season didn't get a GT wildcard and they disbanded. Strange guy, Rick Delaney.

*Denifl got caught doping and had his Vuelta stage rescinded. Later he was prosecuted in Austria for doping and in a unprecedented result Denifl got short jail sentence as did a doping doctor. Denifl was also told to repay wages to Aqua Blue but they said they didn't want the money.

I had to look up who won PR yesterday. There was a time I'd be able to tell you the first 30 placings.

Just no interest in this current generation of robots.

Seems like I'm not the only one who dislikes them. I see some spectator lashed a water bottle in to Matthew VdP's face. I wouldn't condone that shit, but cycling is so fucked.

Can't argue with that. Women's racing is still good.
But if Vingegaard (sic), Roglic or top 4 from Roubaix are racing you know one of them is going to win.
Feel a bit sorry for Mads Pedersen, he would dominate most eras.

Lance was, is and always will be the biggest piece of shit in pro cycling history.
I 'd LUV it if Lance died.
At least Pogacar gives respect to all the classics. Unless MVDP is not starting Roubaix it is very hard to see Pogacar winning Roubaix in next few years

they just need to make taking drugs a category
Been suggested years ago that we just stop pretending doping isn't rampant in sport and legalise everything.

The sport science people have every detail worked out and that's probably a bigger issue.
They weren't good enough to be pros themselves so they ruined sport for everyone else

harsh. He's a cunt but his arrogance brought about one of the most entertaining sporting sideshows in history. I was so invested in that fallout

Just for you Nuke

About 2011 suddenly breakaways on flat stages of the Tour only got 3 odd minutes instead of maybe twice that before.
Somebody worked out this was the optimum gap for conserving energy for the chasing peloton.
Some pricks were paid to work this out and this was before 'marginals gains'.
This is as bad as doping. The team management and riders should be doing this shit themselves

Wondering where this went - was supposed to be in the Palestine thread - Sorry.

Joaquin Galera (1940 - 2025)
Andalucian rider (pro 1961-72) who spent most of his career with KAS. Joaquin won a stage of the 1965 Tour. His best GT results were 11th in the Tour and 8th in Vuelta.
I was trying to think why Galera's name resonated with me then I realised his brother Manuel (1942-1972) was a pro who died in an accident during the Vuelta a Andalucia. This seems to have caused Joaquin to retire immediately.

Barry Hoban (1940 - 19 April 2025)
Probably the most underrated British cyclist ever.
The Wakefield born sprinter roadman was a pro in Europe from 1962-79. Hoban won 8 Tour stages (still a record for an Englishman) in 12 Tours + two Vuelta stages. One Tour stage was at Sallanches in the Alps.
Hoban won Ghent-Wevelgem and the Frankfurt Henniger Turm and also finished on the podium in both Roubaix and Liege.
He spent most of his career at Mercier and later Gan as a teammate of Raymond Poulidor.
Barry had the most remarkable accent: part Yorkshire, part Flanders (where he lived during his career) and part Wales where he settled after retiring.
Barry made a memorable appearance circa 2000 commentating with David Duffield on the Ronde van Vlaandereen - there seemed to be no stretch of the course he didn't know.
Duffers said a lot of these roads used have cobbles in Barry's time - Hoban said the village road they were on going had cobbles in the 60's. When Barry was asked about crashing into wall in the Ronde, Barry immediately pointed out the wall as they went around a bend in another non descript town.

The Amstel Gold was really good today.
I watched the highlights on YouTube once they got to the final Cauberg, I video stuck on the full last 3+ km from Cauberg climb to the finish.
Highly recommended.

The women's race was good too.

Fleche Wallonne on Wednesday next

he was well before my time but I do remember him frequently being referred to by Duffield alright

Ab Geldermans (1935 -2025)
Old team mate of Anquetil and Shay Elliot has died aged 90.
The Dutchman won Liege in 1960. He finished 5th in the 1962 Tour while riding for Anquetil and took a Vuelta stage that year.
