Barry Hoban (1940 - 19 April 2025)
Probably the most underrated British cyclist ever.
The Wakefield born sprinter roadman was a pro in Europe from 1962-79. Hoban won 8 Tour stages (still a record for an Englishman) in 12 Tours + two Vuelta stages. One Tour stage was at Sallanches in the Alps.
Hoban won Ghent-Wevelgem and the Frankfurt Henniger Turm and also finished on the podium in both Roubaix and Liege.
He spent most of his career at Mercier and later Gan as a teammate of Raymond Poulidor.
Barry had the most remarkable accent: part Yorkshire, part Flanders (where he lived during his career) and part Wales where he settled after retiring.
Barry made a memorable appearance circa 2000 commentating with David Duffield on the Ronde van Vlaandereen - there seemed to be no stretch of the course he didn't know.
Duffers said a lot of these roads used have cobbles in Barry's time - Hoban said the village road they were on going had cobbles in the 60's. When Barry was asked about crashing into wall in the Ronde, Barry immediately pointed out the wall as they went around a bend in another non descript town.
Barry Hoban (born 1940-02-05 in Wakefield, passed away 2025-04-19) was a former professional road racing cyclist from Great Britain, active between 1962 and 1980. His best results are 8 stage wins in Tour de France and winning Gent-Wevelgem.
