you get gov furnished equipment (GFE), and they are able to see what you get up to on that, if they look. I'm not sure how hard they look, but they can look remotely. Every now and again you'll hit something, on the web say, that they don't like and you'll get a blocker thing saying "absolutely not". GFE comes from regular providers, but they install stuff on it before they give it to you.
There might be special devices that really senior people get? I dunno about that.

The issue, I suspect, is that this great bunch of lads are using their personal equipment. Regular iphones, that any of us can buy, that are backdoored.

my sister has worked in two jobs, not nearly that sensitive, where equipment was taken away and checked periodically.
to be fair, one was with a bank where IIRC they processed payment for large share deals. there would have been scope there for her to send messages along the lines of 'hey all, major dumping of MSFT shares starting to happen, sell now before it crashes'

Although... I will say... the balls on them. Like, I'd not be doing anything fishy at all on GFE. Even on an end to end encrypted app. But... yeah, maybe they have a diff setup. If I was going to get up to shit on signal, I'd do it on my personal phone. That's wild, thinking about it more. OK.

They want the stuff back at the end of use. You hand it back and they lock it into this big Hannibal Lector cage thing in the basement. There's a lad who works through them, flashes everything off storage, and passes them for some third parties to recycle / use I think. They don't actually check it, as far as I know. The remote lo-jack thing they have installed monitors, or can monitor, in real time. But, yeah, I guess there's not really money to be made with our stuff. Not like insider trading type motivation.
