The imminent decline of the USA (3 Viewers)

i haven't been to the states since 2003. no problem whatsoever, but i think that was partly to do with the blade 1 haircut i'd given myself before i left.
i got a 'NICE HAIRCUT, SON!' at the border crossing (canada/washington state) from a clearly ex-military border official who stamped my paperwork without looking at it.
and a couple of marines in full dress uniform approached me in a car park at one point, and complimented me on my hair. when they heard my 'uhh... thanks?' they copped i was not a local, bid me a good day and wandered off. it was only after that i copped that they were recruiters.

Maybe they were cruising you?

I was pulled over at Regan Airport back in 06.
Had an old metal manual camera in my bag which they swiped for explosive residue.
Some moderately agressive questioning, and the lots of the classic US agressive 'SIR' (i.e we need to look at your bags SIR)

a colleague went to visit his israeli cousins about 25 years ago, and vowed to never visit the country again. he was pulled aside for questioning in the airport for over an hour when he landed, and they basically accused him of being a terrorist. it was only that his (ex IDF) cousin was in the airport waiting for him was able to pull rank, that they didn't put him on the plane home.

I think that there is a certain kind of person who is in love with the idea of statistically-negligible danger, so they get to play out their politics as a grand drama. I know a few of them. they’re lovely, but I don’t rely on them for coherent geopolitical analysis, or travel advice.

it’s not like this person is a salvadoran trying to get across the mexican border, or a filipina trying to avoid federal sweeps through semi-legal workplaces... you know, the people who are in *actual* danger, regardless of the colour of their hair.

for what it’s worth, the most hassle I ever had at US borders was in the obama years. and, ultimately, there is a cross-party consensus on border lunacy ever since the patriot act in the early 2000s.

like in our company (though not in ireland AFAIK) they had to deal with multiple cases of employees raising the issue of their houses being set alight by the laptop charger, when they were told to work from home in 2020.
an english colleague is aware of several cases of people demanding the company indemnify/insure them for this sort of eventuality.

And members of UK Subs were denied entry.

trump speech, october 2028: “and the UK subs! we sent them straight home! so nasty, so nasty. they’re not sending their best. but we turned them around, folks, that’s right. sent them straight back. we have wonderful mediocre punk played by retirees right here in america. that‘s right folks, that’s right.”

I suppose I’m just a bit apprehensive that i (or maybe just my name) seem to be on a list and I don’t know why, or what the “enhanced screening” looks like now.
