Meeting People (10 Viewers)

While eating a shitty Mexican meal yesterday on my own I realised that I'd like to go out with someone purely to not feel like the saddest man on Earth every time I dine out. I am not sure if this would provide a healthy foundation for a relationship, I also doubt anyone would touch me with a barge pole in my current state.

I'm married but still eat shitty mexican food on my own whenever I get the chance.

7 has some serious issues. Psychotherapy thread?

Seriously, I have never ever thought of eating at a table alone to be anything negative. It's the food that matters if you're eating alone, follow your tastebuds.

What about seeing In The Realm Of The Senses on your own?

In the Realm of the Senses (Ai no korida)
Directed by Nagisa Oshima. With Eiko Matsuda, Tatsuya Fuji,
Aoi Nakajima
Japan 1976, 35mm, color, 102 min. Japanese with English subtitles

“Your tears are so salty. I love to taste them.”

Nagisa Oshima’s intense film about sex and obsession was so far outside the boundaries of what was allowable in “proper” cinema that it faced bans in many countries, and even today can’t be shown uncensored in its own country. “By cutting and obscuring,” he told the authorities, “you have made my pure film dirty.”

Based on a notorious true crime incident (which perhaps helped fuel the myth of the “man-eater,” the male fear of a sexually voracious woman) the film tells a simple story of two lovers in 1936 who become destructively obsessed with one another, disconnecting gradually from the outside world—sex as a drug spiral—until meeting a lurid end. And over everything hangs the shadow of Imperial Japan marching towards its doom. Among other things this was one of the first, and sadly perhaps one of the last, attempts to use the explicit, “pornographic” depiction of real human sex as an artistic tool for non-pornographic storytelling.

I'm with 7. Obviously there's nothing wrong with eating on your own and I do enjoy it myself. But when I do I always bring a book and always sit at the bar. There is something oddly lonely about getting a table all to yourself in the evening time.

I like sitting at bars while eating. Even if I'm with someone.

I'm worried that's a serious issue now. Why would it be?

Also, my limited experience of Hannon is that he's very nice and down to earth. Is this pent up rage against him due to the Father Ted connection?

There's a Father Ted connection? Holy God.

And I just called him a twat. It's more like dismissiveness than any rage.

I eat alone / go to the cinema alone / do loads of things alone on a regular basis. Sometimes its better. I get how the place can sort of make you feel a bit weird, depending on its setup, but sure fuck it and enjoy yourself.

We need psychotherapy apparently, @hermie

What about solo home drinking? So, I live on my own and I occasionally like having a few beers on my own while watching a film. Not power drinking, but three or four bottles of beer. Some of my friends think that's a bit strange and sometimes it can feel like it's something I have to justify it but it's the norm for me and I think it's a really nice way to chill out.

I think this is ok! To be honest, if you live alone you can do pretty much anything you want to without having to consider this. I'm more of a 1-2 bottles of beer alone with a movie kind of person, but I don't see anything odd about this. I think the "drinking alone" thing kind of means something else, and has very different implications, but you do get that shame feeling from time to time regardless.

One of my favourite things to do when I've the house to myself is have a few beers and watch a horror film. So I don't think there's anything weird about it but I mightn't be the best person to ask

I drink at home alone but I never go to pubs alone. If I turn up early or if a friend is running late I’ll happily have a beer by myself but I’d never spend an evening in the boozer alone.

I think the perspective on this is all wrong. I don't think at any point was it suggested that eating alone was something people chose to do over eating with someone else (or did I miss that part?). Moreso that people don't have a problem with doing it.

Personally I don't do it that much but mostly because in Ireland I can't help thinking the staff are looking at me thinking that cunt is taking up a whole fucking table, not drinking, and we're making fuck all money off him.

I can't think of a single thing I do in my life that I think having another person there would make better. Conversely, I think lots of things I enjoy doing would be make worse by the presence of another person.

Getting comfortable being on your own and enjoying your own company is a good place to be IMO.

On the eating alone thing - I'm generally fine with it. I don't mind one, or maybe 2 others there. Anymore than that and I hate it - will generally just sit there not arsed to enter the competition to have your voice heard.
