In the scene where they move in the "sold" sign actually says "leased" or something similar so they're just renting in the movie too. And a fancy house like that in Missouri probably costs similar to the mortgage on their smaller but still fancy looking place in NYC.

I knew the Affcock was in the film, and while I wasn't actively seeking it out I was expecting it to be there at some point, but I didn't notice it.
