Posted a thread here and got some great advice would really appreciate some
help here, I'm starting college in september and due to family commitments
will have to remain living at home It's only half an hour away so that wont be
a problem, Just wondered if it will affect socialising? will it be more difficult
to make friends and go out etc if not living there. thanks a lot.

I lived at home during college. It meant I was the only one in my class with clean clothes. For that reason no one would talk to me. And I didn't get the living away from home grant so couldn't go out on the complete and utter lash every few months and blow all my money on hookers and drugs because I didn't have any.

Once you're not averse to crashing on people's sofas you'll be grand. Assuming you live near Dublin are nightlinks an option for you?

Getting the train home isn't a problem, I just wondered if it would make
socialising more awkward and getting to know people in your experiences, thanks for
all the replies.

To be honest, yes it does, a little.

It's just a different experience to the people who stay on campus. At the end of the day you won't be the only one who is commuting, I met one of my best friends to this day on a train going back from college.

as a mature student @ 27 this year and getting 2 buses to college and 2 buses home everyday, yes it had a huge impact on my college socializing.
then i realised that i hadnt realy got the tiem to be socialising :(

It's not ideal thought about leaving it until next year when I could
move on campus, what would your opinions be on that?

Well I mean, if you just want to wear a toga all year and play Louie Louie non stop then yeah, wait a year and stay on campus.

It is what you make it.

I really struggled with commuting in my first year but I was travelling quite a huge distance every day, and by the end just felt really depressed and tired all of the time. Plus I was quite a bit younger than everyone else and just ended up not going out much at all. When I moved into town it was so much easier. But I think a distance of half an hour or so is nothing, and as everyone else said it is what you make of it. There's never any problems crashing with people, and plus I think you'll find that an awful lot more people are commuting than you may think.

I commuted from Greystones for three years, twas grand so it was. Then I lived pretty much across the road from college which was deadly. Then I commuted over two hours each way and dropped out because it was shit.

I'll repeat that there's always a couch to kip on when you want to go out for the night.
