Formed in June 2010 by Irish electronic music producers Neil O’Connor (Somadrone / Redneck Manifesto) and Gavin O’Brien (Locus Solus), Scintilla Recordings specializes in free online releases and limited runs of vinyl releases. Scintilla 01 will be available free online, to purchase online and in selected record shops in dublin and san francisco in late 2010.
First up is Scintilla 01 – Somadrone / Locus Solus : Music For Bathyscaphes
Recorded between 2008 and 2010 by Somadrone and Locus Solus in Dublin and at EMS (Institute for Electroacoustic Music), Stockholm, Sweden, Music For Bathyscaphes is a collection of six ambient pieces written for a voyage in a bathyscaphe (pronounced /ˈbæθɨskeɪf, ˈbæθɨskæf/). This is a free-diving self-propelled deep sea submersible consisting of a crew cabin similar to a bathysphere, but suspended below a float rather than from a surface cable, as in the classic bathysphere design. The album was made using Serge Modular and Buchla synthesizers (courtesy of EMS) along with processed guitars and field recordings.
