The Dudley Corporation – Four More Years

The Dudley Corporation "Four years later it was finally done," sighs Dudley after recounting the tale of the recording of the album. "Because we were taking our time with it, we started getting really picky. I even flew out to Chicago to do some mixing. It was hugely expensive. I didn’t like any of it – it’s something I would avoid doing again." Still, despite any hiccups that occurred, there are no regrets about the final product. "It worked out – it’s just that it worked out quite awkwardly. It’s the product of these four years," says Dudley.

One of the highlights of the last year for the Corpo has been having the opportunity to tour with renowned American band Pinback in Europe and the States. "Up until the first two records, we had never done any touring properly," muses Dudley. "Personally, I think that [tour] hugely altered us. Our playing became much more lively." Much of the reason for the change (Dudley adds that the touring made their sound "relaxed and dynamic") was because of the audiences they were playing to. "[Y]ou need to up the game if you want to make an impression. We played gigs in front of 1000 people," he notes. The Corpo must have seriously impressed Pinback, because they completed a number of tours with them. "We’re cheap roadies!" laughs Dudley. "I thoroughly loved it."

Touring with Pinback wasn’t their only time in America however. "We had done a tour years ago in America that was fairly rough. We were getting to reap the benefits of [Pinback’s] success," says Dudley cheekily. Following their US jaunt with the band, they went on to complete another solo tour – which Dudley describes in one word: "Terrible". While dates in Boston, Chicago (where Shellac’s Bob Weston congratulated Dudley on a great set by the band) and New York were fantastic, the middle states were "not so great."

"We had 17 hour drives to get to gigs – [then] playing to six people. It’s pretty disheartening. It’s pretty taxing stuff," says Dudley. "This time we think we might do a week’s tour of the west coast, fly over to the east coast and rent some gear."
