something cinnamonboy mentioned prompted me to start this thread.

what was your parents record collection like? and did it have any influence on your own music tastes?

given the age profile of the average thumped person I'd suggest all our parents are of a time that was infinitely cooler, music-wise, than we're from, so this might be interesting.

in my case the record collection wasn't that great. Too much Johnny McEvoy. But there was some good stuff.

(all on vinyl)

- the Beach Boys Pet Sounds
- Glen Campbell
- America
- Elo Out of the Blue
- Changes One Bowie
- miscellaneous albums by the Who (Tommy, an early Best Of)
- Wings Band on the Run

(on tape)

- a good chuck of earlier Pink Floyd stuff that was responsible for my getting into them
- pretty much everything by Planxty, which I still love.

But no Beatles. I think possibly because both my folks had younger siblings who may have pilfered their record collections before I got old enough to notice

All classical ... except for

a couple of Beatles records because my Dad worked for EMI for a while in the 60s
some Nana Mouskouri
a bunch of those "orchestral pop" compilations
some crooners like Perry Como I think ...
James Last ....

oh yeah james bleedin last. and the Grease soundtrack. and at least one top of the pops record.

the cover of this compilation has always stuck with me for some reason

lots of tapes of Big Tom, Mick Flavin etc. and some Status Quo because I remember really enjoying Rockin' All Over The World when I was a kid.

Some Queen, some Lizzy, loads of pop compilations, good bit of Abba too, Invisible Touch by Genesis (loved that album when i was 9) and i noticed this vinyl Mario Lanza box set that i reckon came from my grandfather

Dublin City Ramblers, Johnny McEvoy, Dubliners, The Indians, lis of ceili and jigs and reels stuff for my dad, my mother had a Joni Mitchell tape and a John McCormack record. My older siblings had a larger selection

Their records when we were growing up:
Bread, Neil Diamond, The Eagles, Elvis, Bill Haily, Roxy Music, The Carpenters. The only one we played ourselves was Band On The Run.

Dad: Eagles, Tom Petty, Fleetwood Mac, Cars, Creedence, Paul Brady, the Quo.
Mam: Eurythmics, Joan Armitrading, Kirsty MacCall, Elton John, Bob Marley.

Hard to see what influence all that had on me. Have a soft spot for some of it, mainly on the auld lads side although me Ma was a lot more tolerant of what I'd put on - even punk, angsty indie, noise etc

The Beach Boys (heavily)
Buddy Holly
Jerry Lee Lewis
Elvis
Johnny Cash
Platters
Righteous Brothers
Any American 50s compilation of singles from bands.
Anything on the Grand Ole Opera

My parents never listened to the Beatles. I suppose they were married in 1960 and had a kid (nearly two) by the time the Beatles hit the states. I think it was a 'this is what I already know' type of situation.

My folks didn't have much in the way of records, but they had:
Beach Boys
Frank Sinatra
Elvis
Perry Como
Jim Reeves
James Last
Val Doonican and the like

They didn't like the Beatles.

Manfred Mann's Earth Band
Elvis Costello
Steely Dan
Neil Young
Stevie Wonder
Sparks
Doobie Brothers
John Hiat
Tom Robinson
ABBA
Bladerunner Soundtrack
Miles Davis
Phil Lynnot
Tangerine Dream
Richard Thompson
Quincey Jones
Paul Simon
Toto
Jean Michelle Jarre
Errol Gardner
Bob Marley
Supertramp
Flash and The Pan
Michael Jackson
Marvin Gaye
Hall and Oates
Dr. John
Grace Jones
Groove Armada
Daft Punk
Charles Mingus
Prince
Air
Bob Dylan
Leo Kotke
Rory Gallagher
Jackson Browne
