pick four, and only four. preferably visual artists but other stuff is also allowed.

i've recently been asked the same question and, obviously, it's difficult to answer, and i'm curious to see what people pick when required to prioritise so absolutely.

when i was first asked the question, i immediately started thinking of answers based in music and literature (john cage, samuel beckett, etc.; all the usual suspects), and not about visual stuff at all. i seem to be able to keep 'lists' in my head of music and literature stuff much more easily than i can with visual stuff. or maybe i should try looking harder.

Ian, you can't be serious about tracy emin....she's shit. A total charlatan.

Salvador Dali
H.R. Giger
Stanley Kubrick
Frank Miller.... or any of the guys that illustrated 2000AD

I know fuck all about art but do make a point of going to museums whenever I go on holliers.

Absolutely loved the Miro stuff in Barcelona.
Also saw some Jackson Pollock paintings in New York this summer that were amazing.

The thing about art is that you really need to see the originals.
So much is lost in prints or pictures in a book.

This is especially true of modern art where texture is as important as colour, e.g. the huge Jackson Pollock painting in MOMA in New York.

What - do they have to be born within the timeframe, or just creatin' stuff??

My initial list:

Chuck Close
Mark Rothko
Autumn Whitehurst
Kevin O'Neill

dali may have been a good artist
but it doesnt take away from the fact that he was the first to cheapen surrealism for purely commercial reasons
and the fact that he was a fascist sympathiser

andreas gursky
walker evans
david la chapelle (his photography stuff..not videos)
wes anderson (well he made bottle rocket in 96)

I never know how to answer these things properly / comprehensively.

Francis Bacon, Andrei Tarkovsky, Chris Hipkiss, Derek Jarman, Scott Hansen, Pollock, Warhol, John Smith.. other folks. I dunno.

four. not eight. go to the back of the queue. stand in the corner. go to detention. do not pass go. do not collect £200.
