The politics of war and occupation
a day of education and discussion for WSM members and the other
anti-war groups and individuals we have worked with over the last
couple of years

Hosted by '1st of May' branch of the Workers Solidarity Movement

This is a day of education and discussion for WSM members and the other
anti-war groups and individuals we have worked with over the last
couple of years. From it we hope not only to learn more about what is
happeing in Iraq but also through discussing the success and failures
of our anti-war organisations over the last couple of years take a step
towards re-invigorating the grassroots anti-war movement.

We have speakers from the Worker-communist Party of Iraq (WCPI) who are
trying to build unions as well as womens and unemployed organisations
in Iraq and also speakers from a range of Irish groups who have been
active in opposing the war. These include people active in Pitshop
Ploughshares, Irish Socialist Network, AmBush, Grassroots Network
Against War and of course the Workers Solidarity Movement itself.

Who are the WCPI?

Most of the groups taking part in the dayschool will already be already
familar to those who attend. The Worker-Communist Party of Iraq are a
possible exception. They have been described as a neo-leninist group
which broke with the orthodox Communist Parties out of their
experiences in the workers councils thrown up in the Iranian revolution
of 1979. They warn that "Iraq has become a battlefield for a war
between American and Islamic terrorism and the Iraqi masses are
constant victims caught amid the fire between both these terrorist
forces".

They have a comprehensive English language website (at
http://www.wpiraq.net/english ), which includes regular PDF newsletters
detailing the struggles they are involved in. Their recent document
"Worker-communism and the Armed Struggle in Iraq:guerrilla war or mass
armed resistance?" tries to sketch out an alternative path to ending
the occupation. This acknowledges a need for armed resistance but seeks
to "avoid the traditional guerrilla-style of armed resistance"
substituting one which "focuses on mobilizing and leading the
population to reclaim various suburbs, villages, towns and cities and
bans both US forces and Islamo-ethnocentric militia from entry".

This dayschool is open to any group or individual who was involved in
the 'direct action' end of the anti-war movement and who see such
tactics as part of an anti war strategy.
