“A gifted, intuitive, and insightful songwriter, with an aversion to sentimentality and a way of combining words that is evocative without being showy or clever.” – Pitchfork

“Wholly captivating.” – Rolling Stone

“It’s hard to think of many artists in the past twenty years who have been quite as consistent, both in the tone and in the quality of his material as Kozelek.” – Uncut

Red House Painters and Sun Kil Moon front-man Mark Kozelek returns to Dublin for a show in Andrew’s Lane Theatre on July 23.

Mark Kozelek is one of the most critically acclaimed singer songwriters of his generation. Born and raised in Masillon, Ohio, he has recorded six studio albums with Red House Painters, four solo albums, and three with Sun Kil Moon. He has released several live albums and in early May this year released Mark Kozelek – Lost Verses Live.

In 2000, Kozelek broke four years of recorded silence with the release of the solo EP Rock 'n' Roll Singer which featured three original songs as well as covers of John Denver's "Around and Around" and three AC/DC songs. Kozelek expanded on this idea in 2001, releasing a full-length album comprised solely of AC/DC covers entitled What's Next to the Moon.

A limited edition live recording, White Christmas Live, was released by Sub Pop in late 2001. Kozelek was later asked to contribute a song to the Will Oldham tribute album, I Am Cold Rock. I Am Dull Grass. Kozelek provided a rendition of Oldham's song "New Partner."

Around this time, Kozelek commandeered a tribute album to John Denver, entitled Take Me Home: A Tribute to John Denver, featuring Will Oldham, The Innocence Mission, and Low amongst others. In 2005, Sun Kil Moon released their second record on Kozelek's newly formed label, Caldo Verde Records. Tiny Cities is made up entirely of Modest Mouse songs.

In November 2006, Kozelek released a live album, Little Drummer Boy Live. On the album's two discs, he plays songs from his solo career, covers, and material from the catalogs of both Red House Painters and Sun Kil Moon.

In February 2007, Caldo Verde Records re-released the first Sun Kil Moon album Ghosts of the Great Highway, with reworked packaging and a six-song bonus CD. Originally released in 2003, Ghosts of the Great Highway received superlative reviews, moved quickly to the #1 on college radio and has become one of Kozelek’s most loved and best-selling albums.

Kozelek returned in 2008 with the release of Sun Kil Moon's third album April. The album features eleven brand new recordings, including guest vocal contributions by Ben Gibbard, Will Oldham, and Eric Pollard. The release of the new album also brought the re-issue of Nights of Passed Over, a book of all the lyrics to Kozelek's solo songs, Red House Painters' songs, and Sun Kil Moon's songs.

In December 2008, Kozelek and Caldo Verde Records issued The Finally LP, a CD collection of 10 unreleased tracks, including covers of songs by Stephen Sondheim, Will Oldham, Hüsker Dü, and Low among others.

Two newly-recorded live albums, Find Me, Ruben Olivares: Live in Spain and Lost Verses, followed in spring 2009.

oh and will this be a seated type affair?

Re: Word of Mouth Presents... MARK KOZELEK (Red House Painters/Sun Kil Moon, ALT, JUL

excellent. Kozelek solo? Or doing Sun Kil Moon and RHP stuff? Either way, deadly.

Solo show, so material from the new album which is a mixture of Mark's own solo stuff and Sun Kil Moon

The last gig was so amazing that I'm tempted not to go to this one to avoid disappointment. Its a bit hit and miss with Mark.

This.
One of the best AND worst performers. Out of the 10 or more times I've seen him (an old band of mine opened for him a few times...) I've actually walked away at least 3 times. And been blown away the other 7 or so....

Re: Word of Mouth Presents... MARK KOZELEK (Red House Painters/Sun Kil Moon, ALT, JUL

Is it likely there'll be tickets on the door for this? Haven't gotten around to picking any up yet, and I don't think I'll be in town before thursday...

what's so hit and miss about his shows? can he get stroppy?

Re: Word of Mouth Presents... MARK KOZELEK (Red House Painters/Sun Kil Moon, ALT, JUL

Sometimes he's completely happy and ON...joking playing all sorts of amazing stuff and being mr cool and friendly... Others times, though its rare, he just jams nonsensically on a few hits for hours... Ugh. Back in the RHP days I say the entire band storm off stage when he was doing this shit... Then, like a month later, he played until the cops came and turned off his amp. That was at Aerosmith's old venue... Which was an odd place to see them. And they played a deadly ver of Don't Fear The Reaper! Great time!
