He says this in the interview

Now, the most common thing that people do is they put a humbucker in the guitar, but that takes away the very intrinsic value of what makes a Strat a Strat. Now, I don’t put down anybody who wants to do that, and I’m sure there’s an aesthetic there that they’re attracted to. But for me, the Strat with the Strat sound—if you can get that right, that is the optimum.

and its hardly most original looking sig model now is it.

True, but I wouldn't buy a signature guitar that was instantly recognizable. Like the stevie ray vaughn signature or the brian may signature or whoever. There something a bit naff about that.

i quite like the matt black actually. and he got the maple fretboard right. looks like a nice enough guitar.
