ok well i've made a small change today to how the pages are loaded which should reduce the load on the database end of things. we'll see...

Is this why they are so slow after midnight?

there's a load of background stuff goes on overnight - automatic software checks, backups and the like - which inevitably cause slowdowns, but it's the best time to do it.

i should probably shut down the site completely while all this happens because as things stand files are changing and the DBs are being written to while the backup is in progress.

have you checked to see if there's a file with a teddybear icon on the server? that could be the problem.
