In work.
At home.
Same thing.

Sometimes a page will load.

Sometimes not. (Unable to reach server)

Wait 15 mins...

Try again.

Sometimes it works. Sometimes not.

Very frustrating.

yeah that's bound to help alright

Anyways here's my not very comprehensive list of possible causes:

1. Server load just too damn high
When there's too many people on for the server to cope with things can get slowww. There's nothing actually wrong, it's just not able to keep up. Peak times being just after lunchtime.

2. Miscofigured MySQL shit
The configuration of the database server might not be exactly right, which might be causing timeouts if multiple complex queries are running at the same time. The fact that I get quite a few 'MySQL Server has gone away' errors every day lead me to believe this is a factor. Oh and the message board database being over 1GB doesn't help either.

3. Misconfigured Apache shit

The configuration of the HTTP server might not be exactly right which can cause timeouts while it queues your request up. Not convinced about this one, but it's always possible.

4. Firewall / mod_security problems

Some pretty strict default rules on the firewall combined with mod_security being a complete fucker can sometimes lead to HTTP requests getting dropped if they're too long or have weird character encodings or look like they're a match for some suspicious activity. Pain in the hole to troubleshoot, but I'm working on it.

5. You're doing it wrong.

Nearly always the actual problem.

bout 3?? that sounds about right, like everyone gets back from lunch, waits an hour till everyone round them gets back off to dream land so they can check thumped.

Probably too many whacky gags in rapid succesion causing the problem.

that's the thing - it didn't go down at all. it was just you (i got the error messages specifying your username).

all very odd

edit:

Database error in vBulletin 3.8.0 Beta 4:
