I have used engineers in the past who were grumpy or who didn't really pay attention or who just didn't give much thought to their role in the whole thing.

There is no reason in the world that you should have to put up with this if you're paying your hard-earned brass in a studio. If it's an acquaintance doing you a favour you're pretty much at their mercy.

I've been in studios where the engineer is either over-eager and before you know it you have an extra "producer" on board. On the other hand, I've been in studios where the engineer couldn't be arsed doing anything at all. In both cases they have been shown the door.

I was in a studio where the assitant fell asleep on the couch for most of the day every day for 5 days. He was working two jobs to keep himself going, so you couuldn't blame him... but I doubt he was dazzling the main engineer/producer cahp with his enthusiasm.

I remember one guy who was quite a dozy fellow. Kinda nervous. I was fixing a Bass part on a take. This was on tape. When it came to the drop-in he pressed record and .... Silence. He'd left all the tracks in record instead of just the Bass track.

This guy fell apart.

We were more worried about his state of mind than the fact the song now had a three second gap in it.
