What factors affect latency? (1 Viewer)

I have a basic PC, I've plugged my keyboard into the mic input to record some bits and pieces. I did this a couple of years ago and it worked grand and sounded "real-time"ish, but now when I do it the latency seems to have changed and there's a delay of a second or two between I play the notes and they're sounded in Audacity. The latency was never perfect but it seems to have got worse, I haven't altered the hardware set up in that time so I'm wondering what could make it worse?

Have you altered the software at all?

Try using ASIO4ALL drivers for your soundcard, can hugely improve latency issues.

I have a shit computer for sound.

I solve all latency problems by using a small external mixer.
