Well at least this could never happen here... (1 Viewer)

I don't see the solution here. You physically watch your children 24/7?

I dunno.
Especially with smart-phones.

I remember Mark Fruenfelder from Boing Boing was talking about this, he's got kids, and is Adam Ant - kids can only use internet in communal areas of the house.
I think this is a good rule.

Ultimately, kids are going to check out pornhub or something similar, the same way as we managed to get some shitty VHS tape from a friend of a friend. But hoping that an ineffectual filter is going to solve the problem is just a way for piss poor parents to bury their head in the sand and for "well we must do something... and this is something" government types to pat themselves on the back.

I think this breaks more than it fixes

Why the fuck does a child need a fucking smart phone ?

And what constitutes a child anyway ?

Are we at the point were we have to actually discuss what is acceptable spank materiel for a 12 year old ?

Because that seems to be part of the argument.

"Porn gives young men and women a warped idea of what sex is actually like"

Okay, suggest an alternative ?

"Children should learn about sex from their parents"

Seriously did anyone from our generation learn about the ins and outs of riding from anything other than porn ? Was there a pamphlet floating about that I didn't get ?

The issue about porn has almost become a case of the porn itself becoming more and more extreme and thus it needs to be hidden.

Here's a novel idea, accept that your child has seen porn. Accept that men have two erogenous zones the optic nerve and the dick and will seek out stimulous for both at length. Instead of banning everything that is ridiculous in the world why not debunk the things ridiculousness.

"no little timmy, you shouldn't shoot a load in a woman's mouth, they don't like that"

"Yes women do have pubic hair, thanks for asking"

"they look like that because they are fake"

"No, she's not enjoying that"

"and no you shouldn't kill a man with a saw either"

"and yes there are men who like to fuck kids, but unless you are extremely unlucky, like hit by fucking lightning unlucky you'll never come in contact with one. Now here leg it around to the shops and get me a packet of crisps, I'll time you"

This is an unbelievable action i think and hard to beleive the will actually carry this out it is such basic and obvious striping of personal liberties and freedom. The Britsh goverment is going to employ a Chinese company to deceide what people in the U.K can or canot veiw or access on the internet ! For the better good ? By a minorty of do gooder vote seeker's ? I suppose it is good to have a debate on these things whether it will make Britain be a safer society for children i dont know. And i wonder if "extremist and terrorist related content" would be extended to social networking it seem's alot of event's can be sparked off or facilitated by it like the London and other riot's. Something like that happened in Iran around there election time this year.

And i supose "esoteric" would literally mean outside or exterior to the earth ?

the censorware will come equipped to block an enormous swath of legal Internet content, and unless you untick the boxes, this will all be censored for your Internet connection:
☑ pornography
☑ violent material
☑ extremist and terrorist related content
☑ anorexia and eating disorder websites
☑ suicide related websites
☑ alcohol
☑ smoking
☑ web forums
☑ esoteric material
☑ web blocking circumvention tools

Pornography is such a non issue to begin with.

The problem is simple, Fucking makes the world go round. The countries with the most conservative attitude towards fucking have the biggest problems, especially amongst young people. This is yet another attempt by parents to create a monster then slay that monster in order to avoid the embarrassment of talking to their kids about fucking.

And parents, whether you like it or not fucking will be the death of us as a species. You can literally die from fucking. If it means you have to sit down with a condom and a cucumber and show little timmy or jane how to use the fucking thing then so fucking be it.

You wiped shite out of their fucking arses for christ sake, wake up they could fucking die!!! doesn't that concern you more than your own red face ?

Fucking is legal, making porn is legal, drinking is legal, smoking is legal, fucking suicide is legal, anorexia like it or not - legal but now watching it or talking about it is frowned upon to the point of censorship ?

Fair enough terrorism is illegal, it's telling that it's been lumped in with the rest of this. If any more proof was needed that this is the thin end of the wedge it's right there.

I really don't agree with state controlled censorship. I have two brothers living in Asia where they deal with internet and media censorship daily. They're prevented from accessing (non-propaganda/approved) news sites among other mundane things that the rest of us take for granted.

Young children shouldn't be left alone with a computer, smartphone or tablet, not just because they might access something their parents wouldn't like, but because online payments might result in the child buying something they didn't intend to or signing up to something they didn't want and that isn't intended for them. Take the recent example of the dad who's child purchased a car on ebay

I used to work in ComReg and we were kept very busy trying to sort out problems caused by parents' failure to safeguard their children. "My child is being sent porn" - which when investigated turned out to be "your child read an advert in the redtop you leave lying around (with page 3 images), texted a sex-related question to an advice line and received a factual and medically accurate response at the advertised cost".

Children don't NEED unsupervised 24/7 internet access, wi-fi and 3g can be disabled (at provider level if necessary) for mobile phones and tablets.

It is the job of parents to protect our children and expecting the government/schools/creches/society at large to do it is irresponsible and worse, it diminishes our rights as parents. Fathers have been challenged for trying to photograph their own children. One father I know had a stranger (woman) attempt to take his baby from him when he went looking for changing facilities because "he shouldn't be changing a girl's nappy" - she thought that she, a complete stranger, was a more appropriate person than the baby's father!

Crap, that's a jane-esque post!
