Boys of Summer is a Dublin based synthesizer trio made up of Paul G. Smyth (The Jimmy Cake), Ivan Pawle (Sea Dog) and Andrew Fogarty (Toymonger, Reptile Brain) on the Munitions Family label. The group uses analogue synthesizers and tape delays to create a contemporary electronic sound, which draws from early German Electronic Experimentalists such as Tangerine Dream and Cluster; Minimalist artists like Terry Riley and Brian Eno; 70s American Synth artists (Michael Garrison and Mort Garson, etc).

Originally formed in 2004 by Pawle and Fogarty, the duo performed sporadically for a number of years, focusing mostly on their participation other projects - Sea Dog, Toymonger, United Bible Studies and various other projects. In 2008 the relaunched Boys of Summer were joined by Paul G Smyth (The Jimmy Cake) and have continued to perform with international artists such as Cluster, Xeno & Oaklander, Led Er Est, Rangda, Stellar Om Source, Grouper, John Wiese, Pocahaunted, Sun Araw, Lucky Dragons and Gnod; as well as local acts Sunken Foal, Cian Nugent, Children Under Hoof and Slomatics and many others, in galleries, bars, sheds and kitchens around Ireland.

David Lacey plays percussion, crude electronics and tapes.

Paul Vogel is an improviser based in Ireland. His original instruments were piano and
clarinet, but in recent years, he has incorporated electronics into his set up. He was
a member of the Bristol Musicians Co-op in the late seventies and is currently co-
curator (with David Lacey) of i-and-e, an organisation which promotes improvised and
contemporary music in Dublin. He has composed music for radio and contemporary
dance groups and has worked with Phil Durrant, Angharad Davies, Lee Patterson,
Keith Rowe and Mark Wastell, amongst others. He has released recordings on Cathnor,
Confront and Homefront.

Will someone PLEASE remind me next Tueasday that this is on!? I've missed so many gigs recently because I've forgotten they were on. Been listening, almost exclusively, to Boys of Summer on my way to work the past few weeks.

Boys of Summer “Future Ancients”
October 19, 2010
By Bobby Power

Dublin-based trio The Boys of Summer’s third album, Future Ancients, falls in line with the recent boom of celestial synth-kraut artists Brother Raven, Bitchin’ Bajas, Pulse Emitter and Rene Hell, but the band still manages to establish its own sound rather than dilute the genre. Clocking in at barely more than 30 minutes, Future Ancients packs in as much dynamic action and movement in less time than many other bands’ full lengths. Album opener “Hail Sagan” launches into a complete immersion of overwhelming ghostly synth noise. Buzzing and bubbling tones assault your ears and you can’t help but feel as though you’ve been transported into a horror film set in space in a great way. “Zetetic Astronomy” could easily soundtrack Tarkovsky’s Solaris or an Arthur C. Clarke story reinterpreted as an after-hours horror movie. With that being said, the closest album in recent memory that can be compared to Future Ancients would be Expo ’70 side project Umberto’s 2009 album From the Grave. Although From the Grave was conceptually intended to soundtrack a nonexistent 1970s horror film, The Boys of Summer created their own aural sci-fi journey. These scenes are as equally meditative and placating as they are engaging and unsettling. “Cyclopean Walkways” sounds like a looser and spacier Indian Jewelry if they completely dropped all percussion and opted entirely for throbbing and destructive walls of synthesizers. Truly magnificent stuff. I’m definitely looking forward to following what should be a solid discography from these guys…but not these guys.
