Really. I suppose tyres have just gotten much better. I was on Conti GP tyres. I thought the upper limit was about 115.

As far as I remember, (a few years back) the lads in Sorrento were giving out because I went up as high as 115 for TTs. Nothing happened. I just kept glancing down thinking I was riding on rims.

Have you never had blow outs on long brakey descents then? I had one nasty one that wrote off a tyre and when I went to grab the wheel the rim burnt my hand. I always brake and corner very hard since I have been driving the motorbikes though.

I was thinking that the heat blew it out. I was glad none of the lads were around to tell me they told me so.

no, thank god. In fairness I descend like an old woman though.

If I'm going out for a few spins in back-to-back days I won't re-pump the wheel. I reckon the last few cycles before I do pump it again its down to 100 or that and I have to say I don't notice a hell of a lot of difference. It was just the bike shop said that keeping the wheel pumped is how you avoid punctures. That and keep changing the tyres every once in a while. That was enough to keep me doing both.

how often is once in a while?

well, the obvious answer is when they're worn. It depends on the use. I guess every 6-8 months does me. I changed at the start of the summer and that'll do me at least til the end of the year. Thats the road bike by the way. I have the puncture-proofs on the hybrid and they're on it nearly a year with yet no sign of much wear at all. They were 30 bob a pop and it was money well spent. Its gone in for its service this weekend. I'm dreading what they're gonna do to it, seeing how long it is since the last time it was in. I reckon the entire drivetrain is at least 3 months overdue a change for one.

Half decent tyres aren't at all dear. 15 bob or so, so its not a big expense compared to some of the other stuff you have to spend on.

I just realised my rear wheel is bent to shit.

Just checked chain reaction cycles dot com. Rear wheels seem pricey.

Help

Should be able to get it straightened. Try square wheel in temple bar or your favourite bike shop.

more advice please, this time on lids, are they all much of a muchness been looking in cycleways at specialized helmet for around 110 called aurora or something similar seems
really bulky ( i have a very small face) but yer man says it's nice and ventilated which is what I'm after. I overheat really quickly.
also looking at those bell ones in cyclogical, each shop is praising it's wares, -is there much of a difference?
hard to compare and contrast when you cant try them all in the one shop

dunno if they still do it, but when i bought mine, specialised would replace any crashed helmet for STG£10, if you sent the remains to them.

That's pretty cool, will look into that thank!, it kills me paying the cash for something so unflattering, but recently I seem to be spending more time off the bike than on it I have a feeling you probably need an undamaged brain for college.

at that price I reckon everything you'd get will be as well ventilated and as safe. One you get over the 100 euro I reckon you're getting into flash helmet territory. The type that serious cycle people would opt for. Remember, a couple of years ago they made helmets compulsory in pro cycling, including on mountain-top finished. That meant the lid companies had to be extra sure that their hemlets were extra-well-ventilated.

In short, go for the best looking one. I have a Giro Atmos. Its a bit bulkier than I'd like it to be. The new top-of-the-range Giros look deadly (can remember what they're called). Bells also look great. I'm not familiar with that other make you mentioned.

Like... in fairness, you are in Ireland right? there is an element of toughing it out to some extent. You start hauling yourself up hills in 35C and 90% humidity you get hot. In ireland, even when I was racing, sitting into a pack all sheltered, heat was not that much of an issue.

All the same though, I know that the Bell Sweep R (my lid) is somehow magically cooler to wear than not to wear. I realised this in the winter when I forgot the lid and noticed I was warmer without it on. So... yeah. I suppose it channels air through making it cool... fucking I dont really know actually.

It is a very airy lid though.

flashback, if you're interested, check out this link. I know you're a fan of the area. I picked up a copy in Hodges Figgis last weekend. It can be gotten on eason.ie.

Basically, its a book about the Military Road in Dublin/Wicklow. History, topology, etc. I'm dying to know about some of those areas it goes through, so I better know what I'm looking at when I'm cycling up there. Plus I live nearby and am just naturally curious about where I live.

anyway..

I just realised after all these years I don't really know how to balance my gears properly. They slip from time to time and it's doing my head in.

has anyone any advice?

p.s. this is also just an excuse to set up a bike resource thread....

I'm interested to know if you ever got this sorted BA?

Also, I've a question:
1: Recommend me please a good bike maintenance book. That's not a question, but please do anyway. Thanks.

I use google.

Heh, yeah me too, but I want something consistent and comprehensive and all in one place so that I know where everything is. Google throws up all sorts of conflicting and irrelavent stuff.

Also, I need to have something beside me when I work rather than jumping through the bedroom window from PC to Bike and back again.

Do bikes have Hanes manuals like cars do?
