Toots Hibbert is one of the great voices of Jamaica; a legend whose career spans every development in Jamaican music from ska through rock-steady to reggae.
Constant touring showed audiences what Jamaicans had known for over a decade - that Toots and the Maytals were simply one of the greatest live acts in the world. Their popularity increased throughout the 70's with such popular releases as PASS THE PIPE (1978), IN THE DARK (1979), JUST LIKE THAT (1980), KNOCK OUT (1982). IN THE DARK, which included the songs TIME TOUGH and TAKE ME HOME COUNTRY ROADS was internationally acclaimed, and BEAUTIFUL WOMAN from the KNOCKOUT album was an international hit. The world's audiences were able to hear Toots and the Maytals fuse reggae, soul, gospel and even country, into a dynamic original combination.
Toots and the Maytals latest release, WORLD IS TURNING, is the first album of all new material to be released in two decades. The album was
recorded and mixed over a long period between 1973 and 2002, and features refreshing originals with a wide variety of styles and influences, including rocksteady, reggae roots, funky r&b, rave disco, and gospel.
Indeed Toots and the Maytals artistry spans every phase of Jamaican music's evolution, earning him the reputation as one of Jamaica's most consistent and inspired performers, and one of the greatest reggae/r&b singers of all time. Generations of fans - old and new- are discovering that Toots and the Maytals were - and are - masters of reggae and the live performance. The combination of great reggae rhythms, heartfelt vocals, and soulful gospel influence remains potent and powerful -probably the most cohesive mix of reggae and soul music ever, and still going strong.

In the spring of 2002, Keepintime screened for the Redbull Music Academy in London, England. The RBMA is a travelling school for DJs and producers from around the world. After the screening the RBMA invited Keepintime (live) to Sao Paulo, Brasil the next location of the school, in disbelief we accepted. In July I told James, Paul and Derf of the plan and all three smiled broadly and said they were down, Paul quipped "They've already got a lot of good drummers there, why do you need us?" In September 2002 Coleman and I went to Sao Paulo for nine days. We had a week to link with (hip hop) Brasil, enlist three drummers and find enough breaks to make a break record to guarantee commitment from our oversubscribed DJs back home. A record hadn't been custom pressed to make a film since Wildstyle.
In Sao Paulo, DJ Nuts became our guide, consultant, collaborator and friend. Joao Parahyba (Commanche) the legendary drummer of Trio Mocoto and namesake of the famous Jorge Ben song told us he had "waited for a project like this his entire life" and helped us enlist Mamao of Azymuth and he in turn brought the godfather Wilson Das Neves. The record dealers of Sao Paulo blessed us with so many gems that when we came home there was already a buzz. Cut Chemist left tour with Jurrassic 5 to go. J.Rocc and Babu flew twenty four hours straight from Japan to get there.James Gadson turned down a tour with Beck to make it. Madlib the most knowledgeable about Brasilian music among us (he had already done an entire album of Azymuth covers) was the easiest sell – he just didn't fully believe it was going down. Sometimes we didn't either.

PLANES MISTAKEN FOR STARS
+ Kidd Blunt
+ My Remorse
CrawDaddy
Sun 30th July. 8pm
€10/€12.50

Basically...... Gared, Jamie, Matt and some other dudes were in a band called Dismiss. That band went from 1994-1997. Then Gared and Matt started another band, PLANES MISTAKEN FOR STARS, in 1997 with Mikey and their first bassist, Aaron. They toured. In 1999 Aaron left the band and Jamie (from Dismiss) took his place. Then they toured more. In 2003, Jamie left the band, and Chuck took his place. And now they're touring... again.

Eventually they will stop touring and record another album. This will be released to the world in the spring of 2004...
It's a never-ending, vicious cycle... isn't it?

UPDATE: They did stop touring and they did record another album. Up In Them Guts will be released July 27th. Then they're going back out on tour for another year.
