Hello everyone, these mailings have been a bit intermittent over the last few months, but that’s no reflection on the quality of the music this year. In fact, if anything, the high standard has meant more distraction and less mailshots…
All albums, unless otherwise noted.

1. Donnie & Joe Emerson – Baby (from the album Dreamin’ wild, Light in the Attic)
Thanks to my colleague Jim Comic for tipping me the nod on this. From the endlessly nurturing source that is the wonderful LITA, another hidden pop gem unearthed from a time when punk and disco were going head to head. I’ve seen the phrase “bedroom pop jam” used in connection with this and it’s a good starting point. Two brothers in rural Oregon, funded by their farming father, producing the sweetest blue-eyed soul. You can see why Ariel Pink would be into it. (So into it that it turns out he's covering it on his new album.)

2. How To Dress Well – Ocean floor for everything (Weird World, free download)
Tom Krell’s new material with an album on the way in the autumn. Lush, slowed down, slightly warped RnB, with celestial Bon Iver-esque banks of vocals. Haunting and very, very lovely.
http://soundcloud.com/howtodresswell...ll-ocean-floor

3. Polica – Dark star (Memphis Industries, from the album Give you the ghost)
Speaking of Bon Iver, Ryan Olsen and Channy Leanagh are regulars from the Justin Vernon coterie. This second track from their upcoming Give you the Ghost album features the same signature auto-tuned vocals, but used in a way so different to Cher as to render the comparison redundant. Unlike the previous Lay your cards out, there’s a driving synth pulse here, and even behind the filter, Leanagh’s delivery manages to be intriguingly laconic and unsettling at the same time. Wonderful stuff.

4. Twin Shadow – Five seconds (4AD, from the album Confess)
Another winning slice of electro-pop from George Lewis Jnr, making a certain part of the 1980’s relevant again. The part that was mined by early Tears for Fears or Talk Talk, a little bit. Great rhythm guitar work under the synth melody and a vocal full of conviction and emotion should make this a hit with all intelligent dancefloors.

5. Alexander Tucker – Third mouth (Thrill Jockey)
One of Thrill Jockey’s latest releases is the new album by English folk/avant artist Alexander Tucker. I say folk – and folk fans will find plenty to like about the album – but really that’s only a small part of what’s going on in the music. Add kosmische, prog, tape manipulation and electronics, and you’re closer to the effect. That abstract list of genre tags won’t prepare you, though, for the warmth and accessibility of this album.

‘The glass axe’ shows shades of the blues guitar picking style of the late Bert Jansch, but ornamented with beautiful layered male-female harmonies, string melodies and a shimmering organ. The pastoral drones and tape manipulation of ‘Mullioned view’ create the kind of sound you might imagine filling the air around Stonehenge a few centuries ago. The song manages the neat trick of sounding like the past and the future, at the same time. Found sounds of bells and rainfall create an eerie atmosphere on ‘Window sill’ and you’ll find in ‘Andromeon’s’ electronic underpinning an air of kosmische, but mixed up with swirling Wicker Man stylings. The title track features a beautiful, airy vocal floating above a swirling machine drone – a beguiling combination. And 7-minute closer ‘Rh’ is on one level a traditional song of praise, of love, but its psychedelic undertow (more oscillating drones) gives it intriguing depth.

Honestly, while retaining a great feeling of strangeness, this music is still suitable for rocking a small child to sleep with.

Originally part of a piece published on WeAreNoise - http://wearenoise.com/index.php/2012...-christchurch/

6. Hiss Golden Messenger – Poor moon (Tompkins Square)
Beautiful album of “American vernacular music”. First thought might be of a slightly peppier Lambchop, in its country-soul stylings (including some sumptuous brass). Not surprisingly The Band would also come to mind (on the subject, RIP Levon Helm). You might even say, a rootsier version of Sparklehorse, if you were looking for contemporary reference points. Mainly, it’s Taylor’s dreamy vocals that we’re getting off on now. A drawl that’s something short of a slur, something beautiful, a voice you might wish to sit and listen to for some considerable time. So, enjoy.

I also did a Q&A with Mike Taylor for WeAreNoise, check that here - http://wearenoise.com/index.php/2012...-messenger-qa/

7. Last Days of 1984 – Wake up to the waves (Osaka)
Last Days of 1984 are a duo from Dublin – Darren Moloney and Brian Rice – who make blissed-out dance music, using swirling, whooshing synths to create a giddy tropical house rush. You could make comparisons with the percussive offbeats of Tanlines, the euphoric tropicalia of El Guincho, or, at a push, Animal Collective (the latter particularly in the beautifully treated back-of-the-room harmonies). The beaches of Ibiza are never far from the mind on this album, but it’s nothing like a one-dimensional piece of work. Afro-pop guitar flurries wind around the insistent backbeats and there’s also a strong, and very pleasing, hint of shoegaze leanings throughout.
