25/3/2010: It's been an effort around here lately keeping head above the flood of new releases. Because of the sheer volume, I've resorted to shorthand on some of the following, my recommendations for March, 9 albums and 2 singles, in no particular order.

Hotels – The heart that hears like a bat (Hidden Shoal, single)
New single from Seattle band on the excellent Perth-based label, taken from last year’s wonderful Where hearts go broke album. Shades of 70’s-era Pink Floyd, but as fed through a Stereolab filter - ends up sounding like a noir-ish lounge from the near-future. It's great.

Stray Ghost - Nothing, but death (Hidden Shoal)
Don't be put off by the title - this is some of the most uplifting music you'll hear this year. Anthony Saggers is an English ambient drone architect. These tunes, labelled Parts 1-8, are slow-moving glaciers, washes of synths. Absolutely gorgeous.

Sone Institute – Curious memories (Front & Follow)
Beguiling album of Burt Bacharach tones and gorgeous orchestrations, in among the cut-and-paste glitches and samples, from one man electronic wiz Roman Bezdyk.

Dum Dum Girls - I will be (Sub Pop)
You don't have to like Phil Spector to enjoy this album, but it helps. Guitars buried in reverb, distorted vocals and four L.A. rock chicks. (If that makes it sound one-dimensional, it's not - there's the sweetest melodies and some startling harmonies on Jail-la-la and I>Bhang Bhang I'm a burnout.) The Shangri-La's meet The Jesus & Mary Chain and it all takes less than half an hour - what's not to love?

Joanna Newsom – Have one on me (Drag City)
Technically came out at the end of February but it would have been indecent to judge it in the space of a week, it being about 2 hours long, made up of 3 discs. Funny listening to this after the Dum Dum Girls - here no song is under 3m51, most are closer to 10m. So not for the remote control generation then, and Joanna is an acquired taste. But repays repeated listening, as they say. Stand-out songs for me are Good Intentions Paving Company (distinct Joni Mitchell flavour), Baby birch (lilting harp pattern to begin, ends with a completely unexpected oriental-sounding coda) and Soft as chalk (piano-led loping rhythm with great drumming). More of an event than an album (pop music needs more events) and worth the effort, if probably a bit too long.

Tunng - ...And then we saw land / Erland & the Carnival - Erland & the Carnival (Full Time Hobby)
Two really good albums, both roughly speaking in the modern folk category, on the always reliable English label. The Tunng album features loops and beats alongside acoustic guitars, with boy-girl harmonies, in tales lost weekends and love affairs. Check beautiful single Hustle. E&TC uses a fairground organ liberally (making it very reminiscient of The Coral, which can only be a good thing), over folk-rock-with-a-twist chord sequences, with psychedelic flourishes, in stories of lynchings, disturbing visions and unrequited love. For example, The Derby Ram. Both albums slow burners. (P.S. Simon Tong, ex of The Verve is one of E&TC, but don't let that put you off.)

Frightened Rabbit – The winter of mixed drinks (Fat Cat)
Not as immediate as The Midnight Organ Fight, to my ears, but still a fine album. Stand-out song Swim until you can't see land sums them up; chiming guitars, trumpets and swooning strings over a folk melody with massed vocals = the kind of uplift that would get the most miserable soul through the winter. Above everything, a very likeable band.

Rox – My baby left me (Rough Trade, single)
Irresistible bending melody against string orchestations, from Rough Trade's new R 'n B signing.

Lost Idol - Brave the elements (Cookshop)
Lost Idol is James Dean, who runs the Cookshop label in Brighton (home of Implosion Quintet, among others). This is an album of atmospheric electronica, mostly instrumental, much of it sounding like a soundtrack for some mysterious European art-house film. There's also some krautrock, shoegaze and medieval music in there, as well as beautiful hushed vocals. Brilliant, genre-bending combinations.

She & Him - Volume Two (Double 6)
I'm a sucker for this. M Ward and actress Zooey Deschanel team up for their second album, written by She and produced by Him. Reminds me of: 50's doo-wop, Roy Orbison, 60's girl groups, songwriting teams like Greenwich & Barry or Goffin & King, Dusty Springfield a little bit, 70's AM rock a little bit. I love all of those. The production is sublime. The last track, If you can't sleep, is sung a cappella by about ten reverb-drenched Zooey's and is drop-dead gorgeous. My wife found her voice annoying. It didn't bother me. Judge for yourself.

Christy & Emily - No rest (Klangbad)
Beautiful folk and psychedelic shapes, mixed with some unexpected, and welcome, MOR-style singing from Brooklyn female duo. Just listen to Beast. Produced by Hans Joachim Irmler of Faust. A real find.

Some notable upcoming gigs in Cork:
The Unthanks, The Pavilion, March 26
Wild Beasts, Cyprus Avenue, March 26
