Things I should have known before now... (3 Viewers)

After both my brother and sister in law were hit by the Ulster bank outage years ago, when I moved accounts I deliberately stayed away from AIB so our accounts are with different banks.

I kind of thought that was part of the whole deal (respecting Seanc explanation for self-employment purposes). You know, sharing and stuff.

It was a bug bear. In theory, she lived somewhere and I didn't, She paid rent and council tax. I paid gas and electric and internet at that address and she didn't. She also had her own reasons for that arrangement as well. To do with credit ratings, voting, and other such stuff.

But good god the hassle I'd get if I was a day late with something. So maybe there is something to be said for a joint account. Someone else probably knows better, but I'd reckon (with no knowledge) that a joint account might please a bank manager.

Yeah, but I’m not only talking about convenience or the banks or whatever, but the thought processes of the couple. We had a joint account immediately once we were en route to marriage. I can’t really get my head around why people wouldn’t do that except for very specific circumstances. My partner would seriously question why I would want to have different access to resources than her, and frankly so would I!

Well I really appreciate that you said "en route" and not "on route".

My situation was different. But I have no idea what your situation is.

So were you taking 100% of the bills and she was taking 100% of the rental costs? Did that balance out or were one of contributing more each month than the other?

Some of the people I've gone out with manage money like some people load dishwashers. I'd have a joint acc but I'd need another to actually manage the money in those cases.

We’re both awful with finances but I’ve just had to knuckle down and do the budgeting. She does the phone calls and looks for the better deals on utilities. Balances out but can imagine sheer disaster if we didn’t both have eyes on all the finances at once.

Like technically i think I'm mostly thinking of how I do things myself, which is one account for billing and one account for booze and socialising and diesel and whatnot. i think your sistuation is better/different because I remember talking about these things with 1 or 2 girlfriends and internally thinking oh my god i'm going to be blacklisted in a year.

Pre-budgeting era my record spending was fairly heavy so that led to some conversations. Now we agree on the amount we can spend on ourselves each month and transfer that to our Revoluts so that’s ours to do with as we please.

Sorry for not being clearer. We both had bills in our individual names, to prove we exist. We'd transfer cash to each other to pay our half of whatever bills.
I was often late, she often didn't pay. It really is something we should have done better. Best of luck to you and her.

Are any of you married and have separate bank accounts, and if so why? I heard friends say they have different accounts, which struck me as odd. Is this common?
We have been together since we were 18, so we were obvs too young for a joint account then, and I guess maybe there was never a time when it was obvious we should change.

We treat everything we own as "ours" though, and kinda always have.

So you both know what’s in the others account, and if they’re not roughly even (assuming of course) then that’s no issue?

i'd assumed joint accounts were more of a thing for my parents generation; my mother was a stay at home mum with no wage or salary, so having her own account didn't really make a lot of sense?
