The War of the Stupids (1 Viewer)

"They did not consider that the advertising was particularly directed towards young children or that such children would take the statement “the pleasure of sucking” at anything other than face value. They did not uphold the complaints."

jane, you're right. every word of this shit is gold. i went through a phase of reading the food safety authority and national disease surveillance centre reports for fun, and they're brilliant but just not this funny. also, advertising does not lead to compulsive handwashing and fear of chinese takeaways.

Those Chupa Chups ads were pretty dodgy. And to say that "they were not trying to link their product to oral sex; they were referring to the method of consumption of the product and the pleasure it produces" is, uh, horseshit.

The ASAI couldn't even do the most rudimentary digging to find out Chupa Chups have form with this sort of thing...

Bernat's son Xavier has officially been running this privately held firm since 1999 and has been doing rather well at it: Sales in 2000 were up 35% from the year before. But one weak spot is the U.S., where revenues are $50 million; only a third of that is from the lollipop, the rest coming from Smint breath mints and other products.

Solution: a contract signed in August with M&M/Mars, the U.S. candy giant (also, interestingly, family-owned), to help distribute the candy. There are some differences of style here. In 1999 Chupa Chups commissioned a TV commercial laden with sexual innuendo and the tag "oral pleasure." Family-minded Mars helped kill the spot.
