sinkorswim records presents:

The Last Sound - releasing his new album 'Skids' on July 8th. Skids consists of material produced between 1997 and 2001 but rather than a compilation, consider this release the debut album from The Last Sound. Skids is more upbeat overall than its future predecessor - the Warpmart endorsed 'B'locks'.

The launch gig takes place in The Lower Deck, Portobello on July 8th with support from Herv and Steerage. Admission is €8 and includes a copy of the 'Skids' CD.

THE LAST SOUND - SKIDS
Barry Murphy’s alter ego, The Last Sound, has already proven its worth in the form of 2002’s B’locks album. Now Skids combines a generous smattering of his earlier work, into a package that’s equally as impressive.

Triptech’s extended whitewash, probably classified more accurately as dance music rather than succumbing fully to the awkward tension of electronica, still clings firmly onto the inventiveness that is such a trademark of the latter. Helium Balloon initially offers more mildly atmospheric glances, yet ultimately is just as deceptively melodic as the more forceful tracks. Fizz Scene’s sub five minute holler, awash with eighties synths and old-skool beats that turn and twist themselves inside out, gains momentum, volume and force before dissolving back into thinness and isolation. While Sprawl is alive to hypnotic and frenetic beats, Rubber and Bone’s eerie and sinister suffocation is undoubtedly one of the highlights.

Skids stretches itself at times, exploring cinematic soundscapes that flex and flow, while at other times it serves up a funky pop-beat whitewash, latching onto every hip-swinging rhythm in sight. Murphy’s reflexes naturally respond to the smooth and shifting changes in tone, rhythm and beats, creating sounds that gel effortlessly and seamlessly, and yet are always intriguing enough to command attention. Skids would be equally at home soundtracking a summer party, as it would be in providing some welcome background distraction during the headphones hour.

The Last Sound - Skids

****

Barry Murphy(aka The Last Sound)'s 2002 masterpiece, B'locks set him up as one of the most innovative and original electronic artists in Ireland. Here he releases not the follow-up, but the prequel to B'locks, which consists of songs recorded over a period of four years from 1997 to 2001. The time frame means there is plenty of variety, from the cinematic 'Smurph' to the euphoric 'Skids' but Murphy's structured, narrative songwriting and dedication to melody gives the album a strong coherence. If this is what Murphy was doing before B'locks, one has to wonder, what's next?

Steerage will rock the party like it's their own personal 1999 - which in effect, it is. Herv will upstage us with his new range of evening gowns and Rollers/Sparkers are on tonight in an unrelated incident.

It can't be 3 years since The Fall played can it? I can't be still drunk is it?
