I was gonna e-mail all the bands but I thought this might be simpler since I don't have e-mail addresses for all: I'm doing a compilation tape of Irish hardcore, 90 minute tape with photocopied inlay and getting it out ASAP. Side A is (hopefully) gonna be The Dagda, Scared Shitless, Knifed, Easpa Measa, Scientific Bong, Bastard Youth and Puget Sound and Side B will be Cheapskate, Pink Turds In Space, Jackbeast, DEBT, Jobbykrust, Gout and maybe another band or two, that is if none of the bands (past or present) have a problem with it. If anyone from any of those bands sees this could they e-mail me at [email protected] to let me know the story. I need tracks from Scared Shitless, Knifed, Easpa Measa & Bastard Youth...the rest I've got...the tapes will only probably be €1, just whatever it costs to buy the tapes and photocopy doublesided A4. Let me know soon, if you can...

P.S. -the reason for doing this (apart from because it'd be deadly) is because I'm starting a tape distro/label and this will be the first release. After that stuff I'll have is a 60 minute Disrupt tape, two Krigshot LPS on one tape, and various other tapes with stuff like Infest, Despise You, Amebix, His Hero Is Gone, No Comment, Dropdead, Disclose, ENT, Rudimentary Peni, etc.

The whole idea with the distro is to have decent quality tapes with photocopied inlays available ultra-cheap (hopefully not over €2), and of excellent bands (some known, some unknown) whose material I've personally found quite hard or expensive to come across. Perhaps some of youse who have copies of stuff that fits this description will let me use it to make CDR copies of to hence make tapes from. E-mail me with ideas....thanks.

Yeah, it's gonna be pretty much all bootlegs, with permission asked of the bands where possible. But I'm not really expecting a solicitor's letter from Amebix anytime soon.

Em, I'm not really sure how the tape-tree thing would apply? Isn't that more everyone sharing music than people being able to specifically get something they're looking for?

Also, I'm not familiar with the difference between one tape & the next...can anyone help me out? What about inexpensive DIY solutions for making multiple tape copies at once?

Get everyone in the room to shut up when you hold the tape recorder up to the speaker...

If you used the tree structure it would minimise the amount of taping and posting you'd have to do. The downside is the quality will get worse as copies are made of copies.

Howstuffworks.com has a page about tapes and tape recorders, explaining the different kinds of tape, etc.

Coolo, thanks Keeror.

I've been thinking and talking to people about it, and a regular tape inlay would be way too small to do it properly, so the other part is that I'm going to do a zine with it with 1 A5 page on each band with whatever you want on it (lyrics, pic, contact details, biography, porno, whatever), and yis can either do it yourselves and give it to me or give me the info and I can lay it out. It'll be around 5 - 7 mins of each band.

The other idea I had was similar to the tape tree thing and all. What I'm planning to do is make a CDR master of it to record the tapes from, and then instead of giving the bands copies of the comp (since that would be really expensive and I'd have to sell them for more to do that), I'll give them each a master set of a CDR for each side of the tape, the zine pages to photocopy, and the tape inlay/track listing. They can then make their own copies as they need them, and all that I ask is that they sell them cheap.
