i'm inclined to agree with Mitchum...to a point...there are far too many formulaic shitty hollywood movies out there making far too much money from far too many people. being a producer in hollywood is like having a license to print money these days, just buy any old script, add some up and coming star of the day, get rewrites done by the hot new writing team in town and sit back and watch the dough roll in...it's enough to make a man cry. this isn't to say every movie being made these days, including comedies, are pieces of shit, but the ratio is probably 100:1 shit to gold. and that's being generous.

not like i'm saying anything groundbreaking here.

Mitchum, i think you're a bit offside saying most folks here don't view film as art, though.

I thought hollywood was losing money these days?

Well if the director of G.I. Jane says Hollywood is stupid, who are we to argue?

...not forgetting his last three films either (Black Hawk Down, A Year In Provence and that gladiator 2 production with Orlando-can't remember the name of it) & everything his brother has made...but I think he makes a valid point-even though he's probably just pimping the new Blade Runner box-set.

I thought I qualified that 'sweeping statement'?

Certainly what I'm getting from this thread is-

"Shut up Mitchum you pretentious ___ and just laugh because this movie IS funny."

To each their own, I say. Of course rubbish movies are being made. But come on, at the end of the day, who gives a shit? Should we really give a damn that "bad art" is being made? Or even worse - that some people actually enjoy "bad movies".

So what if the ratio of good to bad is changing. There will always be good movies, because if doesn't take a huge budget to make a quality indy flick. There is plenty of fucking awful music out there, but there are still good bands/artists out there if you bother to look for them.

yeah, well, whatever.

you wanna talk pretentious, the fucking Toronto film festival is just gearing up now. it's bloody frightening.

Take a look through this

Most of the films there are pretty mainstream and even if you discount things they have included like X-men and Borat there are still load of very good films released and not just indie ones.

I think the quality of writing in films in general has improved enormously in the past few years.

I wouldn't be at all as dismissive as most of you are here. There is no way the ratio is 100:1

do you have any idea how many movies are made a year? 50 best movies of 2006? there's more than 50 studios (majors, minors, indies, etc) in hollywood, each of them churning out dozens and dozens of films a year. i think 100:1 isn't unbelievable.

Guardian in same-opinion-as-Mitchum shocker!!!!

What a fucking terrible article, Katherine Keigl's character is the only one in the film that's in anyway grounded in reality. What is it with those feminist writers picking everything apart trying to find faults where there are none??

I guess that's a whole other thread, one which I'd never go near judging by the 1234567836 page Queen Kong in Berlin thread.

I think all feminist arguments on thumped should from here on be put through the lolcat translator:

http://speaklolcat.com/

WUT F&^%ING TERRIBLE ARTICLE, KATHERINE KEIGLS CHARACTR IZ TEH ONLY WAN IN DA FILM THAZ IN ANYWAY GROUNDD IN REELITY. WUT IZ WIF DOSE FEMINIST WRITERS PICKIN EVRYTHIN APART TRYIN 2 FIND FAULTS WER THAR R NONE??
