singular or plural (1 Viewer)

Yeah, it's a funny one. If you associate a bandname with a 'leader' or one essential figure, then it's single.
Like 'NIN is a crock of shit'.

I always refer to them in the plural, unless I know theres... well only one member. Or if the band name itself is a plural, it sounds pretty weird when you use 'is'

That's because you're not classifying Jape (or Final Fantasy or whatever else) as a band name, rather a stage-name for the person in question (it doesn't matter if this is accurate or not).
Basically, the name Jape, in the mind of non-American people who use the singular, is in the same category of identification as Prince.

I'm with Moods on this one.

Americans would say RUSH is amazing because they're talking about a single thing, the band RUSH.

I would say RUSH are amazing because I'm referring to the group of people who comprise the band RUSH.

It is.
However, Americans will refer to a band with a plural 'The' name in the plural, e.g. The Beatles.

thats a terrible example, as the beatles has and 's' at the end.
