singular or plural (2 Viewers)

Now that I think about it I don't think I refer to any band in the singular.

No it's not a terrible example, it's the perfect example. Let me clarify. An American might say:
The Beatles were a great band but The Clash was also a great band with many excellent qualities.
Whereas someone from Ireland or Britain might say:
The Beatles were a great band but The Clash were also a great band with many excellent qualities.
 
I always thought the proper way was singular, good to know I was actually saying it right all this time.
