By now you’ll know Baltimore’s Dan Deacon. Dubbed “oddball” by some, “inspiring” by others, he’s just one guy treading many thin lines, confidently straddling between nut-job and genius, downright brilliant and insanely mind-bending, and with a live show from another world inducing more audience participation than a seriously skewed pantomime.
The fact is Dan Deacon is special. And now, three years since the creation of his debut Spiderman of the Rings, comes the new album Bromst. Recorded and mixed by Brett Allen in the North Western Montana studio SnowGhost, and clocking in at 70 minutes, it fuses together the intensity of his live shows with his background in electro-acoustic composition. The outcome is a collection of pieces that are intense and epic, but down to earth and welcoming. Bromst embodies the same energy and excitement as Spiderman of the Rings, but the craftsmanship and composition has a wider scope and richer palette as Deacon explains:
“It’s different, there’s much less computer and a lot more live instruments (marimba, xylophone, glockenspiel, vibraphone, live drummers, player piano etc) so the sound is not a plastic-y…it’s probably a little more dance at times too but also more intense, varied, serious…the tracks are meant to be listened to as a whole to get the complete experience.”
And anyone who’s ever found themselves gathered around the mad scientist, Daffy Duck t-shirt wearing dude hidden behind his array of multi-coloured gaffer-taped equipment and mid tag-team dance contests will know the Dan Deacon experience.
His art is about community and how to organize and inspire it. One of the founders of Wham City, Deacon has annually organized the sold-out DIY music festival Whartscape, and conceived, planned and curated the massive 60 person/30 band tour Round Robin. Bromst is the embodiment of that way of thinking, as Deacon explains:
“Much of Bromst is a story about becoming a ghost, cycles of the earth, mountains, getting older, change, non-linear time, bees, global conspiracy, 2012, and a psychedelic realm that coexists amongst our material plain. A lot has changed since Spiderman – Wham City getting shut down, heartbreak, becoming more spiritual, bullshit like that – so I’d say Bromst has a wider range of emotion and direction.”
