I have a Western Digital firewire HD...works grand...nice flashy lights on it too.

I record straight onto it through the firewire port.

I have 3 external hard drives.
One for recordings, one for tv shows & one for movies.

I've been having trouble recording 8 live tracks directly onto the external HD.
Going to try recording directly onto the laptop next week & move the files over afterwards.

If that doesn't sort it out I'll have to fine tune my laptop with a brick.

If you can switch between USB and Firewire, try the other one (as in, the one you're not using now).
Make sure you've got proper order USB and FW drivers, and not just the generic ones Windows can throw up for ya.
