Racial violence has spread from the Sydney suburb of Cronulla to other beaches overnight.
The city is counting the cost of the race-fuelled violence that has continued through the night and into the morning. More than 20 people have been injured and 16 arrested following unrest in a number of beachside suburbs. At Cronulla yesterday, one man was stabbed when 5,000 people descended on the beach.
The problem began in Cronulla yesterday when drunken mobs yelled racist chants and bashed people of Middle Eastern appearance.
Police and ambulance crews were also targeted.
New South Wales Premier Morris Iemma describes the violence as stomach-churning, and the most disgusting and cowardly behaviour he has ever seen. There have been several apparent revenge attacks by people of Middle Eastern descent.
Meanwhile at Maroubra, more than 100 cars have been damaged by up to 50 carloads of youths, wielding baseball bats and other weapons. Bricks and bottles have also been thrown at Police.
Talkback radio is being blamed for whipping up racial tension, following an assault by a Middle Eastern gang on two volunteer lifeguards earlier in the month.
A spokesman for Sydney's Islamic community blames talk radio for fanning the flames.
He was the talkback rhetoric turned otherwise decent Australians into a drunken mob motivated by racism.
