-The programme "about radios" was the legendary Anorak Hour hosted by Ger Roe for many years. It was extremely popular and well-regarded among certain sections of the audience. It was called the anorak hour for the blatant and simple reason that it was aimed at radio anoraks, so shock horror if it wasn't interesting to everyone. (Self-appointed Radio Critics in Failure-To-Get-Point-Shocker). Anyway, it has finished up for the time being but it will be back in podcast form periodically.

Self-appointed Radio Critics? Don't you mean your audience? You should really try and deal with criticism a bit better Roxy.

But, to get back to Egg's initial question ... I don't mind the talking at all. I like the interviews with people etc ... e.g. Edel's show, the kiosk etc .... They are usually talking about different sorts of stuff to the other stations so that's good I think (as long as it's not radios and boats ;))

Not getting antsy at all, Hugh! I was simply making the point that it felt like the Anorak Hour was being written off without that much regard for the fact that it was probably one of the most specialised shows on the station. Never in a million years did it expect to appeal to anything more than a tiny minority? I've no problem in the slightest with criticism when it's completely valid, like. And I just didn't think that that particular point was. :)

Ye didn't see me denying that all the Phantom presenters are bennis, did ye ;)

Fair enough. Normally I'm all for totally specialized stuff that appeals to virtually no-one but for some reason that show just drove me bananas. It also seemed pretty crazy to have a radio program that broadcast jingles and content from other stations. More than once, someone in our house would go looking for Phantom on a Sunday morning and fail to find it because some Alan Partridge type from Radio Newcastle was on in the place where Phantom usually is.

:D:D

Roxy is spot on, its all part of the licence. Basically every Independent station in the country licenced by the BCI is contracted to provide 20% news and current affairs coverage in its broadcast day. The science bit of this is that Phantom have to broadcast 216 minutes of news and current affairs between 7am - 1am. Of this 216 minutes, a minimum of 120 have to be broadcast between 7am - 7pm. Yep, its a daft regulation, yep its mad that its measured quantitively rather than qualitively but there you go.

For our part, we try to tailor the news and current affairs content to our audience as much as possible and that is where Access All Areas with the deadly Ms Coffey and Phantom Daily in the afternoon came from. Other stations do their phone shows, we do our own thing and try and keep it relevant to the audience.

And no benni should diss the Anorak Hour, tied to a tree or otherwise.

Simon

Does Arts coverage count as part of the "20% news and current affairs"? It seems to me that there is a bit of a hole being left by RTE's gradual abandonment of arts coverage (e.g. axing of Rattlebag etc) that Phantom could fill. I'd love to see them doing more of this.

GNARLY choice bro!!!!

TOO SLOW!

I met a guy called benny once.

I was told he was sound, but he'd been drinking for the previous 16 hours and he wasn't.

There were no trees around.

Grand so lads.

Hugh, genuinely sorry for seeming unnecessarily defensive - it's just the way people are criticising the Anorak Hour seems a bit daft - dubbing it as shite because it focused on the history of radio broadcasting would be the same as giving out because Icon plays all Irish content all the time or coz the goth/industrial show is a bit dark..

Or tuning into the metal show every week since it started in the hope of hearing some Abba and freaking out every single time because it never seems to happen...

Yknow what I mean?
