The famed guitarist had recently completed work on the score for the upcoming Martin Scorsese film, Killers of the Flower Moon

Pavement played a Peel session circa late 1992 without Gary after he went AWOL drinking (i.e. no drums).
EDIT: THIS IS NOT CORRECT. Gary missed the session 22-10-1992 but someone else stepped in on drums.
Sorry.

Gary seemed to be a local legend in Stockton who became a well known character for a short while.
Laughable now to think 39 seemed old back then.
